I’m running plex off my wd ultra ex2 nas. It connected with rj45 into my router. My computer desktop is also connected with rj45 into router. When I use Plex from PC to watch home movie I get a lot of buffering. But if I click same home movie from file explore and open with VLC or any other media player I get no buffering. My wd ultra ex2 does not have the ability to transcode, so that should be the problem. Why buffering thru plex but not thru other media players? TLC TV buffers too.
I downloaded the Roku media player app for my TV. Now I can watch movies without buffering. Plex needs to work on their player. Even when I tell it to direct play on TV or PC I still get buffering with Plex. Now not all my movies buffer but my home movies and 4k movies do. Unless I play with Roku media player on TV or VLC on PC.
Take a look at the dashboard of your Plex server when you watch something and it buffers. The info (when expanded) on who is watching what in the “Now Playing” widget can tell you (or us, if you screenshot it) a LOT of information on what is happening, and we can help you from there.
For example, if the movie is transcoding (due to some TV’s being real bad at supporting some media codecs) and your device is super underpowered, the dashboard will say that it is a “transcode”, and the movie may buffer as the server attempts to convert the video. This dashboard will also tell us/you the size and codec of the original movie file.
Information on the movie itself would be helpful as well. If it’s a modern home movie, then it’s possible that the movie is 4K and HEVC, which some TVs are incapable of handling, so the client installed on the TV will request a transcode. Since you say your server cannot transcode, this could be the cause of the buffering.
VLC is a very capable player that when playing a file using file explorer will never have trouble playing or buffering.
