Is this overkill? Suggestions?

Go big or go home!

$65k?

Only if you buy all the drives up front.

But yeah, crazy.

I’d go with a 9700k or a 9900k or a new AMD. With an AMD you will have to pick up a video card but the cpu cooler is included. That is an awful lot of disk space. I would one more HDD and run two RAID1s. My plex server is running a 3930k with a number of 4 and 2 TB RAID1s and 4 channel OTA tuner.

Seems a bit overkill to me. If you are only using it as a Plex server, you really don’t need 32 GB of memory or a 500GB SSD (assuming it is only for the OS.

more ram is good if one wants to use RAM for transcode temp files

also, 500gig can quickly fill up with video and chapter previews.

better to overkill/over-budget, than under-budget and have to waste time/money upgrading again even sooner.

I’ve never used video and chapter previews, I’ve never really understood the purpose.

I’d personally, assuming money matters to you, just buy 2 sticks of Ram, and add two more later if you need it. How do I get my server to “use RAM for transcode temp files”? I’m currently transcoding two of my videos from 32mbps to 20mbps, and plex is only using 2GB of RAM.

it depends on your OS

with linux you can generally just use /dev/shm which a tmpfs ram drive that uses 50% of installed ram.

on windows you would need some kind of ramdisk program to create a virtual temp drive

will be using w10 pro

It is possible to get windows to transcode in a ram drive.

My experience on debian VM with 16gb RAM was that a dev/shm temp transcoded anything i threw at it fine in RAM, but struggled if I was using DVR to record HD films or more than 3 streams - I think there needed to be enough ram space (?default size was half the RAM) to cache the whole show before it was saved.

I’ve seen workarounds, but none worked well for me. I dont know if Windows would fair better.

I’m interested if anyone has a way to allow several HD films to be DVR recorded in full to a /dev/shm ram disk, short of using 32gb plus memory (allowing 16gb ramdisk)
