I just bought a Definitive Technolgy Studio Advance (DTSA) soundbar system. I hooked up my TV to the DTSA via HDMI ARC with CEC enabled. I have my Roku Streaming Stick+ hooked up to my DTSA on HDMI 1. I have my Roku Plex app setup to Direct Play locally from my Plex Server to my Roku. My media is 1080p with TrueHD 7.1. My DTSA can only support DTS 5.1. Is there a way to force either my Plex Server or the Roku Plex app to transcode my audio from TrueHD 7.1 to DTS 5.1? Right now its transcoding my TrueHD 7.1 to AAC Stereo.
My Roku Streaming Stick+ is on version 9.3.0 Build 4172 (Latest update).
I’m not asking it to produce DTS audio. I’m asking for the Plex server to transcode the audio from TrueHD 7.1 to DTS 5.1. It already transcodes audio from TrueHD 7.1 to AAC Stereo. It can already transcode video from 1080p to 720p. Or even from 1080p to 480p. Seems logical it should be able to transcode from TrueHD 7.1 to DTS 5.1 since it can already transcode from TrueHD 7.1 to AAC Stereo.
You are asking it produce DTS audio. That’s what transcoding is: it’s a combination of decoding and encoding. All of the other transcoding operations you listed are available in free, unpatented, open source implementations. DTS audio encoding is not (and neither is Dolby ATMOS).
Decoding of those formats is readily available; encoding into those formats is not readily avaliable.
That makes sense that if the DTS encoding is licensed and costs money as is ATMOS. I was trying to keep all my media in TrueHD 7.1 for my living room setup. But I guess if I want 5.1 in the bedroom with my soundbar setup I need to keep both formats available. It will just make my media files much larger. Looks like I’ll need to keep TrueHD 7.1 and add AC3 5.1 or DTS 5.1 to each media file if I want to transcode to 5.1 on this new DTSA soundbar. Thanks for the info and reply. Learned something new today with regards to production and transcoding.
Not quite, if I have a media file in AC3 5.1 or DTS 5.1 it direct plays from my media server without any issues at all. Sounds wonderful. Its only TrueHD 7.1 that will go straight to AAC Stereo if its not playing on a non compatible audio source. It won’t even consider playing on EAC3 5.1 or AC3 5.1 from TrueHD 7.1.
My Roku settings are set to Dolby Digital, DTS under Audio. It was set to Auto before. And with it being on Auto or Dolby Digital, DTS it didn’t matter when it came to transcoding TrueHD 7.1. It would always go to AAC Stereo when playing on a 5.1 only audio source.
Here’s one example that to me makes no sense. Audio is EAC3 5.1 get my Plex Server is transcoding it to AC3 Stereo. Why wouldn’t it transcode it to AC3 5.1. Then I thought about the Roku settings Audio being set to Dolby Digital, DTS. So I switched it back to Auto thinking that it would then allow Dolby Digital Plus to play if it was available. But nope, still transcoding EAC3 5.1 to AC3 Stereo.
And here are the logs for it:
