since this update i cant play any video directly without converting it
what is happening?
Going to need more details.
i am on LAN my PC with plex server and my clients such as ipad, apple tv all loading as converting video not direct play.
which usually it would be able to do direct play stream, what’s happened? do it has something to do with windows firewall?

I am also having this issue, Linuxserver Plex Docker updated on Dec 18th.
I can use direct play on Apple TV and Plex for Windows, but web based or IOS is broken.
Trying to switch Plex for Windows to transcoding caused it to fail.

I tried deleting /Library/…/…/Plex Media Server/ Codecs and restarting the container. It re-downloaded but no change.
Still going to need more info. Being able to direct play something depends on the video itself, some server settings, and client settings. Can you be more specific and provide an exact example of what you are playing along with file and client details.
So far everything fails to play on Iphone 11 pro.
Plex for windows works on direct play only.

I checked settings on my phone and server to make sure nothing changed from the update, it all looks the same. the only variables that have changed on my server is the PMS update and a new drive in my snapraid pool.
I also checked my play history and tried replaying some episodes I had previously watched on my phone without issue, they no longer play on IOS but will play on Plex for Windows and Apple TV 4.
well i tried the video that before this new update the same one and it is able to do direct play.
since this new update everything has to be converted for any type of video file.
i will try to reinstall the plex server.

Did you maybe turn on hardware encoding on your server? It may be thinking this is not 1080p and trying to transcode it down to 1080p.

I messaged you the IOS log. And no hardware encoding is not on.
I got your logs. You have the option enabled for Automatic Bitrate Adjustment. This isn’t supported with the new video player which has a lot more capabilities. Turn off this option and it should be back to direct playing these files.

I wanted to share - that shouldn’t be an issue, and is normal for H.264 1080p video.
The H.264 standard internally uses color arrays with dimensions divisible by 16, and if the video is smaller, cropping is performed internally by the codec.
So all H.264 1080p video is stored as 1088 (divisible by 16) internally, and any encoder/decoder capable of 1080p accommodates this.
It solved the problem with my Iphone but my sisters Iphone is still having the issue and the auto setting was already off. I cant go and look at the setting on her phone myself right now, so I just told her to delete the app and reinstall but that did nothing.
It appears the transcoder is broken, on any device it will stop playing if I manual switch from direct play. Except for the iphone below it wont direct play or transcode.

The log says the error is happening on your PMS. Can you provide me the log from your PMS for that time period. If the logs have rolled over, you’ll need to get your sister to try again to reproduce the error then get me the PMS log from that new attempt.

I think I’m seeing this same issue as well. Had to roll back to server 1.21.1.3766 to get it to work. Most of my media is H.264 high@4.1 video with AAC-LC or AC-3 audio. Until the recent update, it was able to direct play. I’m using the Plex official Docker image. I tried updating and rolling back several times and the issue consistently appears on the newer version, but not the older version. I don’t have “automatically adjust quality” enabled.
My issue ended up being the Automatic Bitrate Adjustment option needed to be turned off and the noexec option in /etc/fstab got re-entered somehow by OMV and would not allow transcode.
The update was probably just a coincidence in my case.
