Chromecast Playback stops roughly every 5 minutes

Streaming movies to my television through a Chromecast Ultra. My PMS (version 1.7.6.4058-8fa494d15) is running on Win 10 x64. Right now I can’t seem to get more than roughly 5 minutes into a movie without playback stopping. Every time the playback stops I see the following in the log file:

Failed to stream media, client probably disconnected: 10054 - An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host

Really hoping someone can shed some light on this problem and help me out. At this point I’ve now restarted playback 6 or 7 times for 36 minutes of movie time. I’ve changed my password and signed out of all connecting devices in the process and the problem persists. It’s late…I’m tired…I’m frustrated…just, help…please.

I’ve rebooted the computer, shut it down - disconnected the power - restarted the computer, rebooted and re-setup my Chromecast, reset the modem and the router, and reinstalled drivers for my WiFi card. My WiFI is set to channels that are not being used by anyone else in the neighborhood. Nothing seems to be working. I’m at a complete loss, everything was working fine just a few days ago and I can’t recall any changes since then (except for maybe updating PMS…)

Does it do the same thing if you simply play the file in chrome browser?

Plays just fine in Chrome. I’ve played the movie on the machine running PMS, and on a separate laptop, and both worked just fine without stopping early.

If the movie is played as part of a playlist, when it stops, it jumps to a countdown to the next movie and will autoplay the next movie.

This does not look healthy - not sure if it was you making changes - but what is wrong is that the IP Address for the server is changing and that is not good. Please make sure you use a DHCP Reservation in the router so that it does not change

Will continue to look at logs

Looking at the chromecast playbacks in the last logs after the restart of PMS

There were a number of playbacks.

Looking at the first, it started at Jul 23, 2017 18:10:40 - playing back Patriots Day - resumed from position at 35 minutes and 24 seconds at 18:11:02. Reached playback at 40 minutes and 58 seconds at 18:16:39 - from IP 192.168.1.11

What happened next is the server was notified that playback was paused. I do not know if you paused the playback or whether this is the problem

Thank you for all the help. For a short-term solution I just plugged a laptop into the TV to finish watching the movie.

Over the next couple of days I’ll work through the suggestions / fixes provided and I’ll report back on the success or lack thereof.

It’s been a busy month, so I’m just now getting back to this. So far I’ve done the following:

  1. Adding a DHCP Reservation for the server
  2. Adding a DHCP Reservation for the Chromecast
  3. Re-analyzed entire library
  4. Verified the uPnP is set to “on”
  5. Verified that “jumbo frames” is not enabled

I tried watching another movie (not Patriots Day) last night, and it cut out after 10 minutes 28 seconds. It was then that I set the DHCP Reservation for the Chromecast.

Today I had more time to mess with it, so I started another movie (3rd movie if you’re keeping score) and it cut out after 4 minutes 33 seconds (it cut out at 1:20 pm, for reference in the log.)

I noticed that “NetworkInterface: Notified of network changed” appears three times in this log file, but in all instances it was followed by “Network change notification but nothing changed.” Is something happening at the router that might trigger something like this? All three instances occurred well before I tried to use Plex to play a movie.

I’ve attached the latest log file and the XML file for the movie I was watching today.

As mentioned before if you can get it to fail with a short clip - say a 10 minute clip generated from one of the failing movies then that can be passed to the chromecast team to try and replicate the problem

Thank you so much for your help.

I can say that I definitely did not pause playback right before it cut out, so that’s a little weird to me. We’re (my wife and I) streaming through a Chromecast Ultra and controlling everything with our Google Pixels. Is there any chance it’s something in the Android app that’s causing this? Something in the way Chromecast is set up? I’m pretty sure I tried playing the movie on my desktop (which houses the DB) and casting to Chromecast and had the same issues. If I get a chance tomorrow, I’ll try that again too.

I’ll work on generating a 10 minute clip, maybe there’s something you’ll find there. I just have my doubts about that since three straight movies have all exhibited the same strange behavior, but the playing time before cutting out seems to be completely random (either within the same movie or while watching a different movie.) Let me see what I can put together tomorrow.

Again, thanks for the support.

Tried to create a 10 minute sample using the Plex instructions and got the following. I’ve bolded the few lines that were yellow and red and presumably show where the sample generation failed:

Could you try to use ffmpeg directly for the generation of the sample - and change the 120 (which is 2 minutes) to 600 for 10 minutes

I believe you can download ffmpeg from zeranoe
