Chromecast wont transcode

Can you try casting Power Rangers again from your Android device and get me the Android log this time. Also provide the XML for that movie.

Honestly at this point I have replaced both my chromecasts with Rokus and I am now praying Roku client isn’t next on the “to break” list.

My brother who streams remote from my server to his chromecasts also reports Chromecast and Plex is basically broken and doesn’t work anymore for all these same reasons.

If I have some time this weekend I will see about hooking up one of the chromecasts again and pulling these logs.

When you say the XML for the movie do you mean like a mediainfo report or something?

At this point it would seem clear that there is an issue.

Have any plex staff tested this on chrome cast hard ware yet or are they just wasting our time ?

Yes and I can’t reproduce the issue. I don’t ask for logs if I can reproduce the issue.

Ok, but casting to a CC and casting to Roku are different things.

I mean the XML that PMS provides. Hover over a poster, click get info, then view XML.

I will try to get this over the weekend.

Also you may want to have a look at these threads. I think they are all part of this same issue.

Gday

When reproducing the issue did you have the server remote ?

All my testing was done at home on same network, but my brother streams from my server remote to his chromecasts and since this issue began he says the same thing that chromecast has become unusable. Also he has an iPhone and I have Android so I have a hard time believing it is the app causing the issue because of the different phone systems. It has to be something with the web player thing that flings content to chromecast devices.

I am having this exact same issue!
I can have everything run fantastic when it’s on the devices themself like android, Webplayers and the pc player.
Once more than 2 users starts streaming to their chromecasts PMS start showing one or the other user every other second, Tautulli goes insane and sends me notifications every second constantly.

As ApexAftermath stated this seems to be an issue with chromecasts only as they are the only devices and they go to direct stream no matter what setting they are run at (never shows transcoding even when they are).

I have tried everything! Turning off hardware transcoding, removing patches for hardware decoding and removing the drivers pass through of my nvidia card, nothing helped so far.

Please for the love of god can some one from the plex staff take this issue serious and look into it?!

I’m thinking at this point the issue has to do with the back end web player thing Plex uses to cast content to a Chromecast. This must be something that Plex controls as it doesn’t seem to help at all rolling server version back to before this issue began. They must have pushed a change to this web player that broke it is all I can think of.

Gday is there an update?

They are well known for pushing updates that breaks everything, especially on Chromecasts

Would be great if the Plex team acknowledge the issue and fixed it

Any updates, this is driving me nuts and turned my plex server into a giant space heater because its useless

I had this same issue last night. I was watching a movie from my Vizio’s built-in Smartcast and a friend was trying to watch a movie remotely on their Chromecast and my Tautulli was going crazy and he was unable to watch the movie. I tried restarting the server, reinstalling Plex and Tautulli, disabling hardware transcoding, and nothing worked. I’ve also noticed when intentionally lowering the quality of a movie from 1080p to 720p Tautulli nor Plex states it is transcoding like it had in the past. It simply states it’s playing directly. Not sure what is going on.

This fixes my problem, which is the exact same problem as ApexAftermath.
Had the problem with H264 files, on both Chromecast with WIFI and Cable.

Same issue is happening with me, doesn’t matter if I stream to my chrome cast ultra or Visio smatcast my videos won’t seem to stream at a high quality than 240p even though the video file is 1080p

Tautulli also says I’m direct playing the file which it’s obviously not since the quality is so poor. Tautulli also freaks out and switches/merges info of two separate chrome cast users into one in the dashboard.

My streams don’t pause though, but the movies are literally impossible to watch at 240p on my 80” vizio.

Hey guys thanks for the reports. I’ll look into this today and try to reproduce and get details to our development team.

I have the same problem.

When playing a file even when transcoding Tatulli and Plex Dashboard show it as direct play.

The video starts and pauses after a few seconds. While trying to resume the playback it only buffers.

Only happens when streaming at a remote location, from a Plex app to a Chromecast. Doesn’t matter if the streaming is started from an iOS or Android device.

However for me it doesn‘t happen when playback is startet over the webbrowser.

Hopefully this gets resolved soon. I have 4 Chromecasts and right now all of them are pretty much useless because of the inconvenience for using the browser UI on my smartphone.

Hey guys, there are two issues here;

  1. The Now Playing dashboard (and endpoint that Tautulili reads from) both report “Direct Play” even thought you can see in the PMS logs that the transcoder is running and transcoding the media to the desired resolution/limitation.

  2. When the Terminate Sessions Paused for Longer Than
’ preference is set, playback on the Chromecast will pause randomly after about 20-60seconds of playback.
NOTE: Setting this preference to nothing (clear the input field) resolves this issue.

We are looking into each of these issues, the first being a cosmetic issue, and the second being more serious. I’ll update this thread when I have more to share.

Re: #1.

It’s more than just a cosmetic issue. The API is returning completely incorrect info. The most important being the sessionKey where the same value is being reused across multiple sessions.
