Plex update broke ChromeCast - Something went wrong

Hello team,

Suddenly since a week i am facing an issue with all chromecast devices in my home (4 devices) , once i play a movie (tested with several movies files ) , it only lasts for 2 minutes then app disconnects from chromecast with error message on TV : something went wrong and the andoid app asks if i want to play the movie locally on device.

the same movie(s) were working just fine a month ago

i have tried to restart / reset chromecast devices but the issue remains the same

to be able to watch the movie , i had to go through the disconnection scenario (every 2 minutes) for around 10 times then the same movie plays without an issue.

i am not sure what’s going on , specially i have not changed any thing.

i have extracted the log Plex Media Server Logs_2020-05-12_16-43-48.zip (1.4 MB)

note : same file is working fine on browser and mobile player , only Chromecast is impacted

would you please check as plex is totally down for me & my family

Just has tested by playing the same file in VLC and used VLC to send the same content to Chomecast
it plays without any issue , so it seems that the last plex update has has broken it
any idea? :scream:

Thanks for the logs but unfortunately I can’t do a thing with them.

You turned off DEBUG logging probably thinking you’d save space.

The logs are only about 50 MB in total and are fixed size or 5 roll-overs - whichever comes first.

This is all I see — which doesn’t give anything we can work with.

  1. whatever is on your LAN at 10.1.1.18 is being obnoxious. It’s responding to SSDP queries with garbage. and filling up the bulk of your log files.

10.1.1.18 is a closed source STB (OSN / Showtime) but i have already disconnected it and tested the same scenario however the issue remains the same

however once the stream start , it only lasts for 2 minutes and plex app disconnects from chromecast with error message on TV : something went wrong (Chromecast screen) and the Android plex app asks if i want to play the movie locally on device.

do you have any idea what’s going on? because it impacts 5 chromecast devices and the whole Plex usage for me , we aren;t able to use PLEX any more

Am I correct that your televisions have no other video input / plex app capability and the ChromeCast is your only capability?

I think it’s probably a good idea to get the ChromeCast app logs .
Would you mind recreating one more time and then getting them?

These will be in the Plex web app (which casts to the ChromeCast) logs when using Plex/web to cast.

Possibly ChromeCast firmware update?

A question concerning
PLEX on Windows/mp4 to Chromecast (vanilla, not 4k version)

This combination has worked without any problems before, in hundreds of cases.

It shows nice on the computer screen as well as on my iphone.
But it is stuttering badly when chromecasted to the TV.

I tried optimization with the hope that it will take care of the problem, I have used this on a lot of occasions, but …
Strange thing is that optimization with “original quality” does not result in any file.

But Plex reports that it is optimized.

Does anybody have ideas how to fix this.

fatnasa, I am but a simpleton when it comes to Plex, only started using it literally this week. However, I had the same issue as you and I “resolved” it to some extent. Here is the story leading up to it and how I fixed it. Maybe this will help you out. There is a tl;dr at the end, but I think the context will be helpful.

I tested playing music/movies on my Chromecast for a solid few hours after I set up the server, controlling it through my Android Plex app. When done, I told my Google Home to “Stop casting on the TV” in order to end the playback. I did not use either the Plex app on my phone or access the Plex server via http.

The next day I tried using my Android Plex app to start playback to the Chromecast, however encountered the “Error: Something went wrong” which resulted in no playback starting. I tried using Google Play Music to cast, worked, Youtube to cast videos, worked. When I went back to Plex, “Error” again. I tried unplugging the Chromecast to reset it, and trying again with no luck.

Eventually I tried using my phone’s browser to access the Plex web interface. What I noticed is that, though my phone in the Plex app could see all my cast devices (Chromecast, Home, Minis, etc), the server could not and I only had the option to cast to my browser and my Android app.

I then went to the physical PC that the server runs on and accessed it through the local browser. Same limited options. However, when selecting the Cast options in the Chrome browser’s built-in “Cast…” option in the menu, I could see all casting devices, and the TV’s Chromecast was showing as currently selected for casting. Once I clicked the button to stop casting to the device, suddenly I could successfully cast again from all other PCs, Phones, etc.

I believe that the server thought it was already casting to a Chromecast device, so any app command to begin casting resulted in an error. Once I cleared the connection in Chrome on the direct host PC, the server realized it was not casting and could begin to do so again.

tl;dr = It seems that if you don’t end playback via the Plex app, it can sometimes break the server’s ability to detect Chromecast/Google Home/etc devices which must be fixed by manually disconnecting the cast via Chrome on the server or a hard reboot of the server if you run a headless server.

This happens to me with almost EVERY update to the Plex Android app. I fix it by going into settings, apps, see all apps, Plex, Storage & cache, Clear storage. (You can get there faster by a long press on the app’s icon and then press the “i” for info.)

I then sign into the app, set up the app again, and everything starts streaming without issue to the Chromecast(s). (There is an interesting one time message from the Android app, that occurs with the first stream to the Chromecast, “updating player support” before the Chromecast starts streaming.)

This “something went wrong” is very annoying, but at least I can work around it.
