I am trying to clean up my SSD and there are 6 update files in the C:\Users\[User]\AppData\Local\Plex Media Server\Updates. I was wondering if I can delete them without issues.
Never notice them before - I just deleted mine. :D
Same here on Mac, Plex Media Server keeps downloading updates and accumulating at username > library > Application support > Plex Media Server > Updates
Why is this so?
I suspect that the thinking here is (although not automated) that keeping the previous downloads would let you downgrade your server (in the event you have problems) to the previous release without having to go find it and get it off the internet. That's my guess anyway.
With other programs I run that don't auto update, I always kept the last 2 or 3 revisions of their executable's in my main download folder anyway.
In just checking my PMS AppData, I have about 12 update folders since December 2014.
Wow... I didn't realize that PMS had gone through that many updates.
It's less than 1 GB anyway, so not a big deal.
Glad someone confirmed this…I have over 3.6Gb of updates . Time to tidy before I copy to an SSD
I think most sane users at this point would keep at least the one that’s working in their: ‘DAMMIT! The Update Is Screwed’ repository - because I know as soon as I delete mine I’m going to get screwed.
There are some things in the PLexiverse you can count on - that’s one of them.

Thanks Otto. Very useful. Though I am probably just going to clone my existing HDD to SSD, so all paths will remain the same

If your SSD is big enough there will be no issue.
Keep in mind though, that the Plex data folder has a tendency to ‘grow’.
I came across this while preparing to move PMS to another server. I started making an archive file and noticed is was 60GB in size. 5GB were these updates. I’m working on the tracking down the rest of the 55 GB.

Yeah, I wish companies made it easier to get old versions of installers for this reason. I have many GB of installers for various apps going back many years. There are a few sites that collect them, but they don’t have everything, so it’s good to keep known good versions yourself.
I never noticed this before either. Had 10gb of updates on my 64gb SSD. This really needs to be cleaned out automatically after updates. No one wants years of update files in their %appdata% folders…
