CPU Help!

OK, let me start by saying I am know where near most of you guys in knowledge about computers and PLEX. That’s why I need your help. I built a stand alone PLEX server for my personal use. Well It turns out my son in another state loves it my nieces in other states love it and as you know all my family now loves it. Here is my problem I have been running a i7-920 which can no longer keep up. What would be my best option for CPU and motherboard, do I want more cores, duel CPU’S. As far as price I would like to stay at a grand or lower. The more I read the more confused I get. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Is your computer not able to keep up because all your users need the video transcoded? If so, I would look into re-encoding your videos into a format that doesn’t need transcoding. If they are transcoding because they don’t have the bandwidth to direct play the original file, look into making optimized lower quality versions for them. You may not even need a new computer.

here if you dont want to spend more money, tested found on yt.

You don’t need dual CPUs. It’s better to have your cores in one CPU than split between two. And for this instance, you’re better having fewer cores with more GHz than lots of cores at lower GHz. In fact, some transcoding tasks are single-core only and will hold things up.

Beyond that, you haven’t given us enough info yet to answer your question.

I am running a Dell Optiplex 790 Intel Core i7-2600. Paid 150 on ebay and run 7-8 users at once with 0 issues. Might be cheaper to see if you can upgrade the CPU. I was running it on a HP server that had 4 Xeon® E7440 Processors but It was heating up my apartment. If you want a server you can buy a decently cheap on eBay.
