Yes!
Much easier for users to see the obvious “playback is bad” indicator as a call to action to adjust client settings - as opposed to them just middling at a sub-par quality unknowingly.

What are you saying “Yes!” to ?
lol
Yes but we need all the above setting before I can test something like that you know. What you just come up with is just a hypothetic resolution or I might have missed some great features in Plex settings after all
If the app settings fall within a minimum and maximum let the app decide what bitrate to stream at. If not force bitrate to server setting. This sounds pretty much what happens already but with a minimum. This would enable admins to force any specific bitrate including original. As of now we have to disable video stream transcoding completely to force it. Then we really do have our friends and family calling us to fix it!
To add one thing: if the media falls below minimum bitrate without transcoding then play normally…
OK, so if I am able to boil this ALL DOWN -----
Add two new preference values to the server:
a. Preferred Streaming Resolution (drop down selector)
b. Preferred Streaming Rate (selector - 5,10,15,20,25,30,35,40,45,50)
Add new app setting
a. Remote quality - Use Server Preferred Quality
That sum it up?
I know it’s preferable I just have a bad feeling that we ain’t going to get our way here lol
Well it sums it up but if you gonna stop with 50 all my 4k files will transcode for everybody lol
the current implementation of Adjust Quality Automatically doesn’t work well most of the time - so adding more complexity to the process is just a bad idea
So without Plex, years from now, doing something about it.
The best method is to not allow transcoding and send everyone a link to Plex | Media Client Wiki
I think it could boil down even further
Add a new preference value to the server
a. Preferred video quality (drop down selector that mirrors the values that the client sees, e.g. 2, 3, 4, 8, …, Maximum)
Add new app setting
a. Remote quality - Same options it currently has + Use Server Preferred Quality (and that is the default)
I know i know just wanted to make laugh
As I stated before, we already have something that we’re working on, so it’s pretty unlikely we’ll be adding any extra preferences like this.
Hopefully it is a minimum bitrate along with the forced maximum we already have in place…
Well lets just say what you working on aint going to work. Its gonna be flawd just like the auto ajustment is today. What you gonna do then?
And im still looking for that ETA
That’s a real shame. We’ve been asking for that for 4-5 years.
Out of curiosity, is that something that would be considered if there wasn’t already existing work on this issue?
No, it’s not. I’ve already stated some information about what we’re working further back
Hmmm, probably not, as I don’t think it really solves the core issue here in a reliable way.
Can you elaborate? I (and others) think that it exactly solves the core issue.
Well, what about for users with multiple servers, or for mobile vs TV clients, or when an internet connection changes (due to a busy network or the like). How would that solution handle any of those cases? What we’re currently working on will handle all of these cases gracefully, and maximise the quality for users, while still allowing them to control their data usage.
