Default All Clients to Max Internet Streaming

Development and testing is not the same.

Yes sorry my mistake.

Still, it’s been way too long without updates on status or approximate functionality.

There is not one thing that hints to anything being ‘given externally’ Dunno what you’re reading but it’s not the same thing we are.

Where did you get the external from?

this conversation is really emberassing. Why can’t the client just fall back to maximum quality if a file can’t be played? Because obvousily transcoding is disabled server-side. Done. I’m not upgrading my old but otherwise fine HP N40L so my friends can stream in low quality because it’s been transcoded to 720p per default.

Add me to the list of 700+ in this thread who are begging you for sensible “remote quality” defaults on the Plex clients. I really don’t think most of the people working on Plex have any concept of how deeply irritating this is for users in day to day use, to constantly have our servers hammered because someone is trying to watch a 4K movie and Plex has decided the best option is a 2 Mbps 480p transcode.

Having to explain how to set quality settings to new users is extremely frustrating - when can this be fixed?

i met a problem when i ready to play the movie.
it said “Error code: 4294967283”

anybody else met this problem?

my plex version is: 1.35.1.2632-c6783c78 on my macbook air M1 (using macOS BIg Sur 11.6)

This has been a structural issue for half a decade. Why are clients defaulting to 720p, 4mbps, is it 2005? It has also been 2 years since this thread was made. These two years was their break, and months since Elan’s own timeline.

If I delivered something a month later, I’d be fired from my job. I’m assuming that’s what they’ve been doing. They’re on Team #7 now, probably. No one has been able to deliver on this solution, this great unsolvable mystery.

A simple settings workaround has been suggested, but no. I look forward to seeing their crazy AI powered, machine learning, neural network based automated stream setting solution in 2030, that still won’t work…

@elan is too busy with Plexamp and Plex Dash and Sonic Analysis and all sorts of other ■■■■ outside of the core functionality for the software that we all fell in love with to care about basic stuff like this.

Almost forgot about this…. Sikeeeee cause my users remind me when they go back to transcoding every time there’s an update to an app…

If it was not so annoying, it would be funny.

+100000. For the love of god, please plex team implement this feature. This saves time explaining to my friends what to do!

They won’t do it.

How in the world has nothing been released on this yet.

And you’re saying there’s going to be a closed beta first?

And then a trial period where this new quality selection system will have to be manually enabled in order to use it?

And only after that will it be enabled by default?

That’s assuming it does what I (the server owner) want it to do. To be fair, it does seem like in most cases it will.

So really, what’s the deal. Am I looking at another year of checking the dashboard and seeing every device I don’t physically control transcoding media at 720p? Another year of hopping on a Watch Together stream, reminding people to turn quality up to original, and hearing them say “Oh wow, this is so much clearer!”

Because if it’s another year of that, 0 chance I bother renewing my plex pass. I pay for the info dashboard and the enhanced control of my users. The latter seems to be slipping away, and I already know what I’m going to see on the dashboard every time I open it. All my clients transcoding my media into beautiful 720p.

People clearly want a fix implemented ASAP.

Please stop thinking like if you’re still in the 2000’s

That’s not the 2000’s. That’s today. Many cell providers and hell now even home ISP’s have data limits. The point they were making is valid and I think justifies not giving server owners control over client bandwidths. If you don’t want anyone to transcode ever then turn it off on your sever. I agree with the general idea of this request that the clients should be defaulted to the highest possible speed, but if they want or more importantly, need to reduce the bandwidth being transmitted to their client then they should have the ultimate control over that.

No one is saying they shouldnt have ultimate control. Read the posts. They’re saying the DEFAULT shouldn’t be the minimum, with the option to turn it up. They are saying the DEFAULT should be the maximum, with the option to turn it down.

Most don’t even know they are getting ■■■■ quality and would benefit a lot from this.

You should probably reread my post. I agree with defaulting clients to maximum and said as much in my post. You should also read the post right before mine and the post he was responding to so you understand the context of the post I was responding to. Hopefully that will help you understand why I said what I said. NOvae was essentially implying that no one should ever need to turn down their bandwidth to avoid overrunning their data limits.
