I really don’t understand why this feature haven’t been added yet. It has been a problem for many years already…
Can we have a dev reply on here either saying “we wont add it” or “we are actually working on it”??
Sounds like you only have your own household on your server or less than 5 people on your plex server.
If you have more than 10 streaming and everyone is transcoding a 1080p 20mbps stream down to a 720p 2mbps (default settings) you would see your CPU go 100% and people comment
“we had problems with watching plex, it was lagging and said buffering”
And i would say:
That is because your settings are incorrect and you should set the remote streaming to maximum under quality under settings under your account in the app on your phone or tv app…
And people are like “okay i will do that”… next day, on tautulli “xxxx watching 720p 2mbps…”
Same freaking story of my life for the last 4 years.
That’s why you set Tautulli to automatically kill the streams under certain conditions with an error message telling them if they want to watch then change setting.
That’s a messy workaround and not a solution.
“Normal” ppl would not even understand what that means which would increase phone calls we get. The default is just stupid.
There is a reason i am not the only one here who has prepared a pdf with screenshots for ppl…
I’m just here to say I support this suggestion and can’t believe this STILL hasn’t been implemented yet. It’s actually crazy how much paid subscribers have been asking for this without any solution.
The issue is way simpler than some technical kerfuffle, and the idea of “just disable 720p lol” does not even warrant engaging with.
Plex is exercising the agency to dictate a (single, universal) default stream quality for all types of user on all devices. That agency comes coupled with being responsible for the outcomes of choosing to exercise it.
The compromise ‘solution’ is to keep bearing that responsibility, but make a less poor choice. The full solution is to acknowledge that it’s not something Plex should be making a decision about in the first place — especially not context-agnostically — and letting the user decide what their default should be when they initialise an app/device.
Imagine how nice that would be, coupled with the ability to suggest a recommended setting for your users in server configs, as a treat.
Plex created a problem that never had to exist in the first place, and there is nothing to be frustrated about in the prospect of unmaking that problem.
Please try to consider the purpose of the thread, the history of conversation, and what you are actually contributing to it, when you post — you’re clearly capable of all three, if you choose to engage in good faith. Thanks!
This would be incredibly useful, right now I have a preroll set up for movies that lets people know they can change the quality settings, would be awesome if I could choose from the server and have it be 1080p or directplay by default on their devices.
I LOVE this idea! Give the user the option to select when they first open the app with maybe a brief explanation of the impact of each bandwidth. Like 10Mbps video will average about 4-5GB of data consumed per hour. That way they user can make an informed choice on what they want to do.
