I used a similar script once for 4K sources, but you get an even more annoying issue wherein the user sees an error message, clicks ok and then the user stops streaming from Plex because it’s “broken”.
It’s so incredibly hard to introduce new users to Plex as it is and as soon as something doesn’t work as they expect it to, they stop using it entirely.
Telling them to go change a setting that’s buried 4 layers deep before they can even start watching basically guarantees that they’ll go straight back to streaming Netflix.
Right, lots of people won’t really read error messages.
One thing I like to do is encourage that being forthcoming about issues/errors is helping; people tend to be a tad more attentive just for being able to report the problem.
All in all, it’s pretty funny that the current major issue with Plex is yet another case where they’ve opted to decide things for the software users instead of just providing those users the choice, and predictably creating new and unnecessary problems as a result.
I do not really understand why Plex Dev Team is thinking they know better what server owners need.
In my country, internet costs 16 bucks for 1000/300 Mbps with unlimited data caps. I do not have to care, neither my users, about going out of bandwidth or data caps per month. Almost everyone is running FTTH or FTTB, no datacaps. Clients that can only play 720p x264 are almost gone everywhere. If you have some 15 years old TV they you will be playing via connected PC anyway.
Yet plex wants to transcode even 1080p 4 Mbps x265 because why not. Even if someone is using Plex HTPC app that can play almost everything, no matter HW support.
Just let users decide. If admin wants to convert, allow them. If they do not, allow them to set default to best quality. Make default setting for server and per specific client of a specific user. Some decision table and thats all, where admin can set options.
People that host servers are not that stupid.
I’ve pretty much given up on waiting for this request at this point.
Even if they add this, their application is still too bloated for any large scale deployment. It’s database is constantly tripping over itself.
For all that is holy in this godforsaken world…
PLEASE STOP MAKING MY COMPUTER ACHIEVE LIFTOFF
PLEASE STOP EVERY USER I HAVE FROM COMPLAINING
PLEASE STOP FORCING ME TO EXPLAIN EVERY SINGLE INDIVIDUAL FOR EVERY NEW DEVICE TO CHANGE THIS SETTING
PLEASE… This is essentially a one-line change in the goddamn code/config. You can not seriously tell me this request, having amassed a godforsaken amount of votes, one of the most complained about bullshit in all the time i’ve used plex and followed along, that it is still not done.
No one is retarded, if anyone wants to transcode or change their quality they can do so while watching the video.
I will set up a bot e-mailing you this very feature suggestion on the daily or weekly until you decide to change this. I am sick and tired of this slowpoke “we’re working on it” ■■■■ I saw on post 190, we’re on post 800+ now…
Seriously how hard can it be? No one, literally no one is asking for constant transcoding bullshit. Yet every time we’re back here again.
@elan This “low hanging fruit” you mentioned in post 197 ish, when can we expect it? You have this leverage, please do something with it for the 800 votes it got.
Seriously guys, this has been one of the most actively discussed issues ever since I started using Plex in 2016. If the Plex developers actually wanted to change it, don’t you think it would have happened a long time ago?
Just take the plunge and find another solution already, even though switching might seem like a lot of work at first. The alternatives have improved much in the recent years, and every day you stay with Plex just makes you feel stupider in the end once you have finally made the switch.
Personally, I switched from Plex to the other big commercial alternative last summer, one year after the Plex CTO posted the “There’s active work occurring on this front. Won’t be a year” message and nothing had happened. Now I just wish I had done it several years earlier.
Hex edit the installation and change the setting yourself. LOL.
MITM all connections to Plex and when the bitrate negotiation happens just re-write the packet to original quality. This can prolly be done with nginx if you’re creative.
You can MITM the traffic between the client and server and spoof the bitrate negotiation though because I’ll tell you right now the client doesn’t give a crap what resolution video the server sends it even after negotiation but it does care that the audio stays the same format.
Why do we get fully adaptable streams directly from Plex on their “Movies and TV” content? I don’t see a way to control the quality of those streams so I am assuming they are fully adaptable.
Why can’t we have the same technology for our local servers?
Dang it’s really been a year since my last post in here… sup fellas… crazy to think how much my life has changed and yet…. this is still the most requested feature… How’s that plex arcade thing…. Oh right it was a flop because nobody asked for it lol probably spent so much time and resources on that… yet we can’t get a few solid weeks on your secret sauce solution…. Plex arcade is a foreshadow on where plex is headed since you don’t care about the people that actually brought users to your service…
