Direct download for Photos

Appreciate the kind words, I will pass it along.

Just ran into this issue trying to share photos with my family. Can’t believe this was brought up 8 years ago and is still not resolved. We can share access to download movies and shows, but not photos? Makes no sense.

Yes, some of the other long-time gaps have been filled in basic Plex functionality (such as downloading movies/video local), but this one remains.

Currently, the only thing putting ones’s photo library on Plex accomplishes, is doing slide-shows. If we had the ability to download photos - or even better, selection/organize, and download as a group! - that would be a game-changer.

We could then use Plex to manage our family photos, and family members could download the ones they want on their devices, or to use for various purposes (ie. making a calendar/card to print, etc.).

It is a great opportunity for Plex as well, as the big-tech cloud options for photo management are terrible in terms of privacy concerns and what you have to give up to get that capability. Plex would be a way to do it ourselves.

THEN!!!, Plex could start adding more robust photo-library features, but even the basic, simple download button would be huge (and I’d guess not too dev resource intensive).

Dear Plex Support,
Is there a way to download all photos in a playlist of photos in a single click? Perhaps in a zip file?
Thank you!

It would be super useful to have a download function that grabs a folder and zip all the files into a archive for direct download.

The function should at least be available in the photos browse context and playlist context.

Use case:
You access Plex on phones, tables, tv’s, computers and so on. If you wanted to create a album that you later wanted to order a physical print off, you simply create a playlist by adding the photos you find while exploring your collection of photos.

Some technical thoughts:

When you’re ready, you can access a computer and find the playlist, select the “
” tree dots menu on the playlist and select “Download request” → If you are a owner/admin user, the download will be processed by Plex Media Server right away and be available under “Manage → Downloads” with info such as the playlist name, filesize, request date, requested by etc. The download url should be available with a uuid filename prefixed or similar, that can be shared with other Plex users if you want to. (would also make it easy for devs to avoid existing file conflicts)

Another scenario/flow if you are not owner/admin is to approve a download, that is only processed once it has been approved.

This “Request download” scheme could be used generic for all kind of media-files, not restricted to photos. Imagine you wanted to grab a music album or video to copy over to a media player device with no app support.

An option to allow users that you’ve shared libraries with to request downloads would be neat too.

I would like to bump this–it’s a super useful feature. Otherwise I have to AirDrop photos from my phone to my Mac despite the Plex sync in place. Either that or just have an option to reveal the file in the File Manager - that way we can just grab what we need.
