Direct Stream and Plex Music

I am running the Plex client on my Android phone and it has Direct Stream enabled. About 3/4 of my library is in FLAC. Does this mean Plex is feeding FLAC files to me? Cause I really don’t want FLAC files sent to me over mobile broadband.

If I turn off Direct Stream what codec and bitrate will Plex transcode to? I would like it to transcode to Ogg Vorbis, since that supports gapless playback.

And lastly, if I do turn off Direct Stream, will it attempt to transcode my MP3 and AAC files, or will it only transcode losless formats such as FLAC and Apple Lossless?

Log into your admin account on the web app, then check out the “now playing” activity. It will tell you what transcodes (and into what) and what does not. Just play around with your Android app and watch the web at the same time and you will have your answers.

I am pretty sure that all you get to hear on Android is mp3.

Sadly, mp3 does not support gapless playback

Gapless playback is not a matter of file format.
But of general server and app support.
And unfortunately there is currently only one Plex app which (kinda) supports gapless and that is OpenPHT/Rasplex.

Gapless is totally a matter of file format. All lossless formats support it. And Ogg Vorbis, Ogg Opus and AAC all support it natively in the codec. MP3 does not. Anything MP3 does is a hack.
