I share lots of movie contents with family and friends and Im always told it keeps buffing etc. The reason why it keeps buffing is due to them not understanding how to use plex on there end. Example I have multiple versions of one particular movie, 4k,1080p,720p etc. The 4k is automatically the chosen by server to play due to highest quality which is perfect but for those elderly folks that don’t understand how to choose play versions get frustrated with trying to remote stream a movie without knowing its a 4k movie when they should choose a 1080p version to remote stream. I hope i made sense? So what i would like to ask if you can give us an option to disable remote streaming of 4k or 1080p or 720p etc. individually or entire 4k, or 1080p, or 720p etc. in movies etc… Other than that you guys are doing great . I would greatly appreciate it if you guys could look into this feature added to plex server thank you .
Have optimized versions of the 4K content and then limit the remote streaming to the max you want to allow and also specify your upload speed under remote access. Then plex will choose the version that more closely matches the remote speed.
Thank you for the reply and sorry for the late response . I would have to optimize all the 230 movies i have and i rather not optimize my movies and would prefer to just have an option to restrict from streaming 4k content via remote access. I only stream 4k content local on the household network. Im sure there a way they can give us an option to be able to disable 4k content from remote access.
You can tag the movies as 4K and then block access to the 4K tag for your remote users.
Thank you for the reply ALucard1 . How do we tag 4k movies and then block access to remote users ? I have multiple versions of a single movie. Is there a way to tag only the 4k version in a movie and then tag it to restrict it from remote streaming access to users ?
You just opened another easy option that plex can add. So under user and sharing tab, then under restriction can plex add a restriction based on resolution etc. this would be a easy fix to not allow users to be able to stream 4k content out of the server network etc. I hope this makes sense. Instead of labeling lots of movies one by one which will take forever if they just add the restriction option under restriction based on resolution then this would fix all 4k content from being streamed remotely.
While you wait for Plex to implement your suggestions, better get a few calendars out to mark the time.
The easiest solution is to keep the 4K content in a separate Library and don’t share that Library with remote users (or users that don’t have the bandwidth to handle it)
If you use Tautulli there is a script function. You can set it to test if the file being played back is 4K and being transcoded. At which point the script will kick in and stop the steam and send a message to the user telling them to select the lower res version. I use it, I just can’t find the original script GitHub page at the mom.
hthighway , I can do that by creating another movie library but then we have a headache of switching library to watch movies within the server network. I also tried the tag method and it did restrict the 4k content for sharing but not only did it restrict the 4k in a movie but also restricted the 1080p and 720p version of that movie which defeats the purpose of what im trying to accomplish with less headaches. I think the best option would be under /user and sharing / shared folder - in my case would be / Movies / restriction / add allow resolution / exclude resolution etc. this would be a great add on but who knows if plex admins or staff actually reads the forums ? Is there a links for suggestions on improving plex server ?
I’m not disagreeing with you, your suggestion is fine

And yes, what you described above is what I’d expect to happen when you do that.
Which is why I suggest moving 4K to its own library.
And while that Kill 4K Transcoding script would stop Grandma from trying to play 4K, it would not help her in figuring out how to pick the correct version in the first place
I am a bit confused, I suggested to make optimized version so that the optimized versions would be streamed instead of the 4K and you said you did not want to optimize over 200 movies. Since this indicates you will only have the 4k versions I recommended that you lock the 4K movies by tagging them and then not allow that tag. Now you say that if you tag them they can’t play the lower resolution. So I am not sure what you are really wanting to do.
Correct Alucard1, optimizing is out of the question because have I over 200 movies and that would take forever. You are also correct in me tagging the 4k versions because if i have multiple versions of that movie it tags the movie tittle and not the specific 4k version of the movie at first i said cool this will work but it tagged the whole movie tittle and there for basically restricted the movie tittle itself for the shared user, so neither version of the movie was shared doing this method.
hthighway you are correct , I like my suggestion better for what i think other plex pass users would enjoy. My suggestion would actually help grandma with play version by restricting resolution version to said shared user .This would actually help not only with 4k version but also allowing me to be able to choose what version i wish to share with users etc.
so back to reality, as those suggestions aren’t happening anytime soon -
You options are -
- move the 4K to it’s own Library and not share it
- Upgrade your server so it can better handle transcoding 4K
- and make sure Grandma’s client is set to a remote streaming bitrate that her bandwidth can handle
Thank hthighway , I will try and register @ github and see if maybe they will consider my suggestion. I will try and reply to this thread that has already been started on restriction .Adding Exclude Only restrictions by blacktwin · Pull Request #262 · blacktwin/JBOPS · GitHub . Thank you for your help …
Let me clarify something, You only need to optimize movies that you do not already have lower resolution versions, it is a way to get a lower resolution video from a higher resolution without having to rip the movie in a lower resolution. So in your case only tag the movies 4K movies that do not have lower resolution alternates so they won’t show on the remotes. Then limit your remote quality to 720 or 1080 as well as on the clients. Now on the client all they have to do is hit play on the 4k movie and the lower resolution will be used rather than the 4k without them having to choose which version to play. That is what I do.
Yes it would be nice to have the option to block 4k from streaming as a remote option, I will be looking at the kill streams script as well since I have Tautulli running already and had never checked in to the scripts.
Forget it trying to solve the puzzle to register at github.com is retarded it say to choose the dice that adds up to 14 and i do so till the 20th time and it says almost close something like that did it several times with not luck in validating my humanity lol I ques I am ET lol
