Do I still need a NAS

Hi Everyone,

I currently have a Synology 214play with 2 3TB drives in. These drives are now full, so I need to upgrade. When I first bought the NAS, I used it to run Plex, SABnzdb Sonarr etc, but after many performance issues, I switched to just using the NAS as storage and my PC handles everything else. With my now needing new bigger drives, should I put them in the NAS and transfer my media to it, or would I be just as well putting them into the PC? Can I still create a RAID0 if I put the drives in my computer?

What would your advice be? 1) Buy new drives and carry on using NAS, or 2) Buy one new drive and put them all in my PC?

Thanks,
Dom

Depends on how you’re using this storage.
If you want to be able to access the storage from multiple devices (not just through Plex), you’ll be better off to stick the new drives into your old NAS and migrate your data.

If the storage is solely used for Plex purposes… and if you still have space inside your PC to add more drives… that sounds like a reasonable option.

Most OS support some level of software RAID. Not sure you really want a RAID0

Yeh it’s just Plex. I think when I bought the NAS I had intentions of doing other things, but I’ve never done them, so won’t miss them. I think I’ll just get a couple of 12TB WD Red’s and stick them in my computer.

With regards RAID0, everything I have is replaceable, so I’m not worried about the lack of protection.

Does anyone want to buy a second hand DS214play with 2 x 3TB WD Reds in?
