Does Plex force transcode for Vobsub or PGS Subtitles?

Server Version#: Latest
Player Version#: Latest

Running the new Android Shield TV Pro 2019 for server and client. I’m trying to confirm if PGS and Vobsub subtitles inside an MKV (and selected to play when watching) will force a transcode or not with the Shield TV Pro (2019)? I’ve read some conflicting statements on this, and I don’t see confirmation one way or the other in the Plex support docs.

If it will not force a transcode, I would like to verify any required settings as well that may be necessary.

Thanks

My setup: Shield Pro (2015) <–HDMI–> Denon 4300 <–HDMI–> LG B7 OLED

VOBSUB & PGS subtitles direct play when playing DVD & Blu-ray rips made with MakeMKV (i.e. in a MKV container).

Note that if the audio is transcoding, enabling SRT subtitles forces a video transcode on any Android TV device. Plex does this to keep the audio, video, & subtitles in sync with each other.

Same for my Shield, should be the 2017 model.

Got it.

I’m: Shield Pro (2019) <-HDMI-> Denon AVR-X1400H <-HDMI-> LG B7 OLED (very similar!)

So I think I’ll be good. It will direct play all audio and video formats I throw at it so far. Thank you for the confirmation!!

vobsub are bitmap subs, and support for that on the client side is rare, so you’ll see transcoding. Probably best to OCR them to SRT in 1 mass process, it’s a one-off process and quite quick.

VOBSUB & PGS are both image based. The Shield displays them without transcoding.
