Just wondering if the plex app on smart TVs in my case a Sony running android, pass through atmos, true HD etc if my tv and amp both support e-arc?
It will passthrough those Audio sets, IF… your TV & Audio system support those Audio sets: ie. Atmos, 7.1 True HD, 7.1 HD (DTS-X) whether it’s by way of e-arc or arc.
I have a Sony Z9D, the Plex app on the TV will passthrough Atmos, but not the others, even though my Soundbar supports them all. Which is why I use the Plex App on a streaming device (Nvidia Shield) , now I’m able to passthrough Audio sets that my Soundbar supports. Which is all of them.
Long story short, the answer is NO
there are no known smart tvs that will pass through HD audio via app & e-arc.
e-arc appears to be a function limited to HDMI to HDMI.
in other words, e-arc works with external hdmi sources (ie shield or bluray players or consoles, etc)
e-arc does not appear to work with via software tv apps.
whether this is an hdmi limit/restriction, or tv manufacturers simply have not updated their internal core software/hardware to be compatible with e-arc, is unknown.
the shield is still the only mainstream solution for 4k/hdr/dolbyvision/atmos.
