Double clicking on plex tray icon tries to force me to sign in? Why the behavior change?

I would probably keep an old installer of a previous version than v1.32.2 if you have one. You may still have them in the servers update folder in appdata. which you can copy to someplace else to make sure it is not deleted.

Yes I have those but I’d like to keep using the latest version, if possible. Can you answer my below question though? I am trying to understand if I can keep using the latest version(s) as long as I keep my registry keys backed up.

“Okay. So as long as I hold onto my registry keys, I can keep using it as normal? Because I tested it by doing a full uninstall/completely wiped it off my machine (including deleting registry keys). Then I reinstalled plex media server, imported my registry keys, and then imported my appdata folder and everything still works like before. So as long as I hold onto my original registry keys, I can keep using it unclaimed?”

Yes that should work but I personally have not tried it so am reluctant to tell you it 100% will. I’m just saying in some world where you have to wipe your computer and lose the registry, installing an old one first then updating to current should also keep the install “grandfathered” as far as I am aware

Got it. So say I am new to plex, or lost my registry keys, and was starting from scratch. If I were to install the latest version, and then try to set up a local plex media server, are you saying that I wouldn’t be able to do this AT ALL without claiming/signing into the server?

If so, why am I allowed to keep using it unclaimed if it was never claimed/signed in? What is the thinking on that? So you’re allowing people to keep using unclaimed servers if they were NEVER claimed, but if someone makes a NEW server then they can’t do that at all without claiming/signing in? I don’t get it?

In other words, why is Plex grandfathering in people with already unclaimed servers but not allowing new unclaimed servers?

I think for now introducing it slowly so folks get used to the idea, then collect any feedback retuned about it. and why they for now are keeping the a method to disable via the enableLocalSecurity=false for folks like yourself who don’t want the change

Got it. I have one more question…don’t you need the browser URL method if your internet cuts out? Or you lose internet? So are they saying that you’re supposed to sign in FIRST and claim the server, then you can use it offline as much as you want?

Thank you for passing my concerns to the developers. How can I follow the news to see if Plex changes their mind and gives back unclaimed access? There should always be an override for users like myself who are okay with taking the risk and manage their home network well. I feel you will lose A LOT of users if this rule goes through…

It’s essentially a question about security vs. convenience. In the case of people who are in control of their own home local networks, this is inconvenient and a bad change. I think that an override should always be left for people who do not want to claim servers. The risks should be communicated clearly and then it is up to the individual to decide whether the risk is worth the reward.

your auth token should still be stored locally so it should not prevent local access if internet is lost.

That post with info I shared would be updated if things change in any direction.

Thank you sir. Just curious - how would plex prevent people from simply using an old version of plex media server, setting up their server, and then simply updating to the newest version, as you said?

For now we can’t. I suppose in the future that work around could technically be removed. If we do I would think that post would be updated about the change of behavior or be noted in the release notes for the server.

Okay. I just hope Plex considers the users like myself who only need Plex locally and would prefer to keep servers unclaimed and not associate them with accounts. I really hope they reconsider.
