My previous setup was a WD Duo 4 TB nas for storage and a PC running Plex/Sabnzbd.
I need to upgrade my storage so I decided to opt for a DS418play thinking I will be able to get rid of my PC.
Mostly everything is DIRECT PLAY, however when I watch a movie on my iPad I assume there is transcoding happening. Will the DS418play do good enough with transcoding 1080p mkv (4-10gb files) to my iPad or I should keep my PC for running plex and everything else on the NAS ?
I own a Ds418play. there is 2 things to be aware of.
The DS418play will be able to handle a 1080p transcode stream without issue if hardware acceleration is enable. To enable hardware acceleration, you need a valid plex pass subscription. For example, transcoding a 1080p hevc 10bit with dolby true HD7.1 atmos to my nexus 6p, it takes arround 40% of the CPU with hardware acceleration enable.
If you have embedded subtitles it won’t handle this. Same media, if I activate a srt embedded subtitle track, I get a popup message telling that the server is not fast enough.
