DS918+ with 4 gig ram, at 97% cpu transcoding one MKV?????

Will try tomorrow…

New logs from webbrowser chrome on Samsung S7. And plex app.

what were your results? You can just say it. Same problem?

I just found something in your logs. Something not cool on Syno. I should have seen it earlier . I apologize

Your networking issue is because DSM is alternating sending out packets based on load. It’s how they do it in their router and I totally forgot about it until now

Mar 11, 2018 23:43:01.891 [0x7f29b062d800] DEBUG - * 3 eth0 (192.168.2.229) (loopback: 0)
Mar 11, 2018 23:43:01.891 [0x7f29b062d800] DEBUG - * 4 eth1 (192.168.2.230) (loopback: 0)

Both adapters on the same subnet but at different IP addresses. This will drive PMS nuts

  1. Control Panel - Network - Network Interface
  2. Create a Bond adapter. (links both adapters as 1 for aggregated throughput)
  3. It doesn’t need a smart switch done as I show.
  4. It will take the IP of eth0
  5. Now PMS will see only 1 adapter and Synology will only have 1 adapter.

Whilst better after link aggregation, itn still won’t stream fluently when “Original Quality” is selected.

Here are the logs.

These are my settings:

So I need to change anything as a result of this?

I just tried putting my MakeMKV file of “Octopussy” on a usb thumb drive and plugging it into the TV directly via USB port: Flawless playback. So it is most definately a NAS / network issue.

By bonding these two adapters, which present as two IP addresses to both your TV and PMS, into one address, Source IP and Reply-To IP (for the TV sake) is resolved to a 1:1 mapping.

It is a simple next step to take in resolving whether or not we have a network/communication issue

I think I** fixed** it:

I’ve been using powerline adapters all the time and, at the time of purchase, couldn’t find a free wall outlet for them, so i plugged them** into power strips**. Now into wall outlets, which seems to have solved the issue. Star Wars IV buffered two times within 7 minutes, however, I believe it is now a mattert of matching H264 stranscoding qaulity and speed to best fit my DS918+ (4 GB ram).

Ouch! Powerline adapters with surge suppressing are not conducive to streaming  The signal loss is extreme.

Good find!!!

Do you have some recommended settings for Plex with said Synology? I would really like to get best possible quality. If Media server / Plex means lesser quality, I might just as well stick to my BD discs. (although, this would of course not be as handy.

Whilst my router and Power lines can handle 1 Gigabit and 1.2 gigabit respectively, the actual output from the power line in my wall socket is everything from 70-180 mbps (typically above 100 I thin)k. I read somewhere that the electrical system itself (i.e. the cables and wires used) can pose a limit as to how many mbps can actually go through…

Basic physics & electronics: Playing the full 100+ Mpbs image direct from the disc, using the dedicated hardware of the player to generate the HDMI signal is always going to be better because there is no transcoding. The moment any of it is touched, there is inherent loss.

You are correct, powerline adapters have an inherent limit due to the limitations of inductive coupling between the ethernet signal and the voltages already present on the powerline. Injecting a RF signal into a high-voltage environment has limitations.

what, a powerline is the problem? i still can’t get my head around it… i’ve purchased ds918+ and hooking it on a powerstrip since it is connect to ups to prevent sudden power outage and have battery backup.

and yes, i have experienced the same problem with op as my ds918+ cpu usage is peaking above 90%.

so based on this thread, you would suggest switched the ds918+ power adapter straight to ups? would it improve / lower the cpu usage?

note: sadly, my ups power adaptor did not came straight from the wall. it is from another power strip… (a lot of daisy chaining happen in my setup, lol)

they’re referring to powerline network adaptors that provide an ethernet network connection through the established powerlines in your house, not the poweradapter/lines/sockets themselves where your NAS is getting its juice from  Those powerline-network connections aren’t the best choice for solid streaming and can fluctuate a lot in bandwith/connectivity, which will make Plex transcode to probably a lower bitrate.

Please do not confuse use of a powerline ethernet adapter with a UPS or surge-suppressing powerstrip

Powerline ethernet adapters indirectly couple, like an old-style dialup modem, the data. A Powerline adapter reduces your normal 8 pin ethernet connector to a 2 pin connection. This has a tradeoff in the form of speed and signal isolation ike old-stype dialup modems which used telephone wires. They were severely limited in speed because telephone wires were not of the same quality as ethernet wires. This is also true with your house. Wiring designed to transmit power wasn’t designed to transmit data.

Do all 4k movies have the same issue? I have had a few of them encoded in a way that made it puke.
I have found that the audio transcode or subtitles have a disastrous effect. I bought an XBOX one X in the hopes that it could do ATMOS but it has to transcode everything. (They say that MS doesnt give access to the ATMOS stuff … im going to call BS because other apps on the Xbox can do it.) PC works fine. Apple TV 4k is supposed to support ATMOS and dolby vision in ios version 12. Additionally TV processor might not have enough power. I have a samsung q9f that does pretty well but I am just using a PC until I can get something to direct play ATMOS. I know there are other things shield etc. but I have had apple Tvs and they have always worked well. (Even when i had to do the DNS/profile hack for the old ones.)

Do you realize you posted in the Synology forum for what appears to be about MS and Xbox?
