DVR transcode

I see that the DVR Transcoding is experimental for the Prime. It also mentions having a fast CPU. So how experimental and how fast a CPU?

Test it out and let us know.

I’m testing two HD HomeRun Connects on an 8 processor server. While transcoding four streams (3xiOS and 1xRoku) I’m seeing about about a 30-45% usage of each CPU.

So about 10% per stream? Not bad… what’s the CPU you’re using?

It did seem to cause some issues. I’m not sure what the usage was but I was also trying to watch a movie while it was recording and had stuttering issues. The movie started direct playing and stuttered. So I tried again and plex started transcoding the movie and stuttered again. I thought it was a little odd. Now Plex has skipped 2 recordings, and I can’t find any log too see if it was related to transcoding the recordings.

Recording 2x (transcoding enabled) and watching 1 other live while feeding out a locally stored movie transcoded to a tablet chewed about 25% of my i7-6850k. Considering the amount of horsepower under the hood, that’s a pretty hefty load. Just for grins I enabled it on my Shield server and the entire thing dragged on a single transcode. It didn’t make the Shield unusable but definitely was struggling.
