Fanart possible?

how did u get it working?

Change "itemDetail" to "itemDetailWithImageHeader" (don't forget to change the closing tag too) and then add this on the next line

          {{IMAGEURL(Video/thumb::1280)}}

The trick ended up being the "required" attribute. My guess is that tells the AppleTV to wait until the image is downloaded before rendering the screen. I'm assuming what was happening is that it wasn't waiting for the image and then the layout was getting all screwy when the download took too long.

Excellent work!  Is there any way the artwork can be dimmed some to make the text more readable?  Or maybe something done to the text itself?  I'd love to have the full artwork behind it like that, if there is some (relatively) easy way to make it readable.  Anyway, again... excellent work!

I don't think there's any way to do either of those things in the XML directly, but I just tried dimming the image manually in Pixelmator and the results are pretty promising.

looks really nice.. good job

nice one!

I checked my python modules (on OSX) - by default the image module (PIL) is not installed on OSX, which might be needed to properly crop+resize.
The full background images are quite large - it could hit on performance when doing resize operations.

PMS option would be best - I did see a skin for PMC some time ago which also used cut-outs/crops for tv-shows. (not sure if that was handled by the skin itself or by the transcoder).

*edit*
looks like the transcoder will always maintain aspect ratio (regardless of width/height).

- another idea: have an black to alpha gradient image and merge it with the fanart image (example)

This could be done with imagemagick - but just like python, it is not installed on every system.

Currently I'm having the transcoder scale the fanart down to 1280x720 to fit my screen, so the only remaining step would be to crop the image.  That doesn't solve the problem of having to have the PIL module installed and it may still take too long, but PMS is doing about half the work for us already for what it's worth.

Wow, great work here....thinking out loud: perhaps we could use the banners from fanart.tv?  They have banners available for TV Shows and Movies, and as a fallback we can also use the HD Logos? Just a thought.

An example:

back-to-the-future-part-ii-52078656b1805

Both options could work well. One issue I ran into when playing with that idea was that the banners are narrower than the screen and from what I can tell the image is always pinned to the left side of the screen.  If we could either find a slightly bigger source or have something scale them up to the needed width this could be really neat.

Something to notice from my earlier image is that there's a reflection or something below the poster art that obscures whatever is behind it.

In my last picture I tried to minimize it's effects by moving the entire content block down so that the reflection is mostly off the screen, but that might not be an ideal solution.

But the effect is not there on your previous picture is it ?

At least to me it doesnt

Thanks to taller this is what i did with mine.. not so easy to se the text .. but again.. do i even read that :D

I just moved the poster art and the text down. That in combination with the darkened picture makes it mostly unnoticeable, but it is still there.

Here's what that banner looks like for example.

Only downside to this is that for some reason i havto chose the movie twice… First time it thinks and trailers not avaloble shows up… Second time i get in to the pre play right away… Guessing cause its transcoding the background? Strange that its not the same with all posters

Taller u have the same issue?

I haven't seen that.  Mine occasionally takes a bit longer to load and shows the "Accessing Trailers" with the spinning wheel, but I've never seen it fail

I use imovie app wonder if that affects it

Looks kinda nice..

what's your XML look like?

 {{IMAGEURL(Video/art)}}

its kinda retarded though.. i had to change it cause when i have hig res the movies with smaller res wont show up

and i still have that stupid havto click 2 times.. but only the first time.. after that it seams cached

what is the code for banners?

Maybe you should try the normal trailers app to see if its working there on your side

i have already reverted to the apple trailers.. was not it :(

I see your signature has an Apple TV 2 in it, is it possible with a jailbroken apple tv to capture the XML given from the Movies app? I'm pretty sure there has to be a way to figure out how apple does the automatic coloring, as well as in the XML might be a way to make sure the image doesn't pass a certain height.

Maybe.. but i have no idea how.. is someone helps me maybe we can figure it out.. however the  apple tvs that i have that are jailbroken are on 5.0.2 and not ios 6, and i was under the impression that the fanart dident come until 6.. i might be wrong though?

my thoughts go to the Plex app for ATV2.. on them u have the fanart section already working.. and its looks nice.. maybe that is a better way to go? if the programmer from that app could hep us? i dunno..

this is the preplay on a jailbroken ATV in the plex app

Looks pretty much the same dosent it?
