Bump. Also wanting this feature.
QNAP Launches Quad-core AMD Ryzen TS-x73A Series NAS
Meanwhile, three years after the introduction of AMD’s first Ryzen APUs, Plex still does not have proper support for AMD Video Core Next (VCN) hardware encoding. So much for the QNAP’s advertised 4K UHD transcoding…
Wow, sad that paying customers are just ignored like this.
It’s been broken for too too long. And it has been that way since Navi and Ryzen 4000 series APUs and Plex support just keeps giving excuses ad infinitum. It comes down to them not adding proper support for VCN 2.0 and above, which was introduced with the RX 5000 series Navi GPUs in 2019. Two years later, no support. You can upvote for support here, though!
Sadly Plex is too busy trying to find new ways to monetize their service and create more profit for themselves. They dont want to add support for “new” hardware, cause that is “just a few users” and it is nothing in comparison to contracts with Atari and AMC
Glad to see this up at #9 of most voted (and not yet implemented) feature requests now though.
I wish I could use Plex, because I would really like to pay them the full price, but this is NOT happening until I can get AMD transcoding working on my linux server. This is because:
- You simply CAN’T BUY an nVidia card these days.
- Intel CPUs right now aren’t worth the money.
I don’t get it why they shouldn’t update their libraries.
Bump and broken.
Agreed. Come on Plex devs do us all a favor and implement this. It’s been around for a couple years. AMD is doing great with sales and is less expensive than Intel. Plus chip shortage and stuff… I got an x400 Amd Ryzen Pro 7 4750G that is waiting on this. So come on let’s do this.
I’d also love to see this added, and don’t understand why this is being ignored. Looking at this, it seems trivial to add HW encoding support for AMD. Why do we have to tinker with the application just to get support for something that’s definitely not niche anymore?
Tabascl, thanks for posting the link…I had missed this other thread.
However, I think your assumption it is being ignored is probably wrong.
I did a fair amount of testing last year, including some steps of copying .so files into directories, etc… And it just didn’t work. Admittedly, I may have missed some key step, but given how the work-around recently works, then breaks, then works then breaks, strongly suggests to me that they are overtly working toward support, and just not yet communicating their plan, because they’re not yet ready to support it.
I am making assumptions with no more information than you have.
Lastly, I actively dislike Plex, Inc. silence on product plans… It’s unnecessary and ultimately harms customers, mostly by stimulating unnecessary purchases (e.g. non-AMD GPU). However, I don’t take their silence necessarily as inaction…the truth is we just don’t know
Looking forward to support for VCN in the next decade…
Five bucks says that they support whatever Intel replaces QuickSync with before they support AMD properly.
I just bought a new ASrock 4x4 with the 4800U Ryzen in it. I probably should have done a bit more research, but here I am with a smoking hot cpu and software transcoding…
I put my vote on this issue. I really would like to see some movement from Plex.
Still no official response… wow
Voted. Been using Plex from the beginning. The 5700G is looking like the perfect chip to stick into my Unraid server and would be a shame not be able to transcode on it. This chip looks like its going to be hot property, you’d be silly not to support it.
Thanks for your support!
Thanks for your support!!!
+1, is this how you vote?
I was excited to get the 5700G and build a plex server. I’m not buying anything until they add support, and it is extremely disappointing to see no official response; despite the large market growth of AMD.

HTH
I lost my synology in a house fire. I was looking to build a new server of my own vs synology. I was thinking 5700g but to my surprise still no support. I may be forced to buy a used Intel for the time being unfortunately.
