I have used Subsonic for a long time before switching to plex. This is currently the #1 feature I miss from subsonic. Subsonic allows my 1000+ GB FLAC collection to be streamed to my phone with a reasonable bitrate (say, 160 kbps) over the 3G network. This exact functionality is implemented on the video side, we should have this for audio, too.

Coming from Plex for Android, I thought that direct play of FLAC was all you could do. I haven’t had any luck forcing any sort of transcode.I would like adjustable transcoding options so I could stream, say, 96kbps OPUS over mobile and not run up against my data cap.
I would like to see this as well as direct play for Opus.
Yes, Opus would be an awesome choice for low-bitrate, high-quality audio streaming over 3G networks.
Adding my voice for the ability to “transcode” losslessly from FLAC to ALAC (then direct play ALAC in iOS)
+1 for FLAC to ALAC conversion on ios

But plex iOS does not direct play alac. That stopped ages ago: https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/177013/alac-being-transcoded-to-mp3-in-ios

Plex iOS doesn’t do ALAC : https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/177013/alac-being-transcoded-to-mp3-in-ios

Right, which is why I specified also direct playing ALAC on iOS.
+1 lossless playback and “transcoding” FLAC to ALAC
+1 lossless playback on IOS and web client
I also would love to see better support for lossless files. For example, the option to force local download/sync to preserve the original lossless file on mobile.
+1, it is not that hard to embedd a proper audio player, why do you think anybody storing music as flac woulc be happy to hear it as mp3 or aac ???
This would be great! Please consider adding transcoding of FLAC to ALAC (as an option) for playback on Apple devices.
+1, it would definitely be great to play and sync lossless FLACs as ALACs on iOS.
+1 here also … come on, start supporting FLAC on local synched content on the iPhone.
Whatever happened with this idea? Another vote for FLAC to ALAC.
+1 lossless playback on web client. Seems odd this has not been addressed.
Please, think of both ways: ALAC to FLAC and FLAC to ALAC. But ALAC to FLAC preferred since my library is stored mostly in ALAC and I have an Android phone.
+1 for this
+1 would love that
