Regardless of the device name, aren’t the MAC addresses unique? How about mapping a user configurable name in the player to the MAC when it registers with the server?
A layer of abstraction is needed here, this is a design issue, not a device issue

The same with me. This is extremely frustrating. I have 3 devices in my house that have Firefox running plex, yet all of them say “Plex Web (Firefox)” I also have two devices that have Chrome running plex, yet all of them say “Plex Web (Chrome)”. I have six friends and or family members that use their browsers to watch plex, yet all of them show up as either “Plex Web (Firefox)” or “Plex Web (Chrome)”. In addition, how can I ask Alexa to “ask plex to play Vampire Diaries on Plex Web (Firefox)” when there are three “Plex Web (Firefox)” on my network and many more used remotely.
I am a “lifetime” Plex Pass member and one of the first plex users EVER. I dropped XBMC as soon as plex was released back in 2008 I think. I have even purchased merch a few years ago from your store. Use the glasses every day.
As was previously stated by another members. We thought the primary reason to have the ability to see what devices are connected to our server, was to see who and what devices have been authorization to connect to your server. With there being so many of the same device names showing up, how can I know if this person or device should be given access or if the device is still active.
I love this feature of being able to revoke access to individual devices, and I hope it stays a feature, but there is no way of knowing which device is which for same type of devices and all browsers.
Big +1 to this requested feature! I would love if plex would consider adding a feature where we as the owners, can set names against devices to ensure we recognize all devices signed into our servers (Beyond just trying to name the local devices themselves). Please plex, consider this feature as it’d be a great feature to have!
+1 , i have two android cell phones one for my wife and one for me and they are both simply labeled as the same exact android name since they are the same hardware, if i want to sync something to them i have to guess which of the two is the right phone to send it to, really need the ability to change the device name.
This would be useful as when I call the Plex skill from Alexa to play on my Roku - she “resumes watching Suits Season 7 episode 14 on Roku_uk_5253923591.1999”
Would be nice to just change the alias to ‘Roku’ perhaps?! 
Would love to have this implemented as well, since my Android tabled is labeled as " $8a$925" and my Amazon Fire Stick is called “Frire TV”, even if its name in the Amazon settings is “Luca’s Fire TV”.
This should be a very simple edit!!
