I’m on the new fire TV app with several devices in the house and the device name in plex ‘devices’ won’t change.
I’ve uninstalled the app but it still shows the old name not what I have changed it to. On manage devices on amazon it shows right and on the fire TV boxes under ‘about’ it shows right. I’ve deleted the devices in Plex server setting and when I readd it still uses old names.
So, somewhere in Plex it is remembering the devices and using old names…
Can anyone help with how to change this?
It isn’t currently possible to change the device name for the app on Fire TV, sorry. We definitely understand it’s an inconvenience for folks (like you) with multiple Fire TV devices and the ability to customize the name used is something we’d like to support moving forward.
But where is Plex getting the device name from?
They are using the device name as it was when I originally connected Plex on the device, so not a ‘stock’ name but one I chose, just that it won’t change now following my new device name.
If you upgraded from the previous version of the Android app, then it carries over any name that was set there. For new installs, the name used is just based on the device model. As mentioned, this is something we want to improve moving forward, but it’s not currently possible to change the name, sorry.
Aha, I understand now.
Well, as you say it would be very useful for people like me with multiple devices to have the option of changing the name.

This is pretty crazy and seems like such an easy fix considering it has been on all the other versions of the client. Why would such a basic feature be removed (even if its built from the “ground up” as I read in another post). If it has the ability to look at the old config then why wouldn’t you guys add a way to edit this in the new version. Also because I uninstalled and reinstalled my other devices to get them passed the “no saving settings” bug now all my devices are named the same and makes it a ■■■■■ to cast something from my phone. Is there any sort of ETA or maybe a roadmap so we can know what to expect? This issue cropped up almost a month ago and still has no fix? It would be nice to know if it is even being worked on currently.
Any update on this?
If you aren’t going to provide a way to edit it why not use the device name from amazon as the default? The latest updates seem to focus solely on looking “pretty” at the expense of actual usability. Can’t change the name, lost the ability to delete thru the client and even now that its back, having to go thru a sub-menu for a commonly used feature is annoying, and scrolling horizontally thru a large library 2 items at a time it just plain stupid. And the fact that I could sync to my 5GB firetv stick but CAN’T sync to my fireTV with a sd card in it is pretty ridiculous
Can a developer please comment on when this will be fixed? I have 3 FireTVs in our house, and they all show up as the same name when I’m trying to “fling” content to them in the iPhone app, which makes it impossible to know which one I need to send to.
I got the same problem. However i got 6 Fire TVs.
Where can i file a bug report?
I am a long term paying customer and haf so far no feature requests or problems.
Any timeframe on when this will be added back in?
any updates on this ??
Having 10 fire sticks that report MY AFTB as a device name is a real pain. My elderly family folks have issues scrolling thru the menus so i opt to remotely start shows or movies from my 26TB movie server that they want to watch for them. It is impossible to tell which device they have so i can fling to it. please reactivate this feature asap. /sadface
It would be super helpful if someone from the Plex team could update if this is a feature being worked on or if it’s something on the back burner.

It’s definitely something we’re interested in and working to support. Unfortunately, it’s also something that’s not nearly as straightforward as one might assume.

Chris, new user thanks to the new DVR Feature…and now paying for Plex Pass…this is a must. Running 1 Amazon FireTV and 4 FireSticks here and I cannot clearly see what is being watched where because all of the FireStick’s are the same name. I can see who and what thanks to using the Users feature but that isn’t good enough. I understand it may not be a “Easy Fix” but the first entry in this thread is now more than 6 months old. Worst case scenario, require that we statically IP our FireTV Equipment, you can then associate the name to either the MAC or IP of the Generic Plex App Running on it as a Source. Just add an IP Address on the Device Tab for each device where we can put what we want in there and it’s like DNS for Plex. Our IP = That Device’s Custom Name. It’s not pretty but at least it’s something until you guys figure it out. To further the issue, I am running Home Automation Software that is monitoring Plex and running Automated Events based off of the Devices. All of the Devices look the same to that software because of this issue too. Thanks for any help you provide.

There is still no word on an update for this?
What’s the latest on this? Haven’t heard anything in a while.
New Plex Pass subscriber here and also very disappointed this has not been resolved with a proper update or at least a workaround. Even having an artificial increment (1, 2, 3, …) after the device model names would be an improvement (we would at least have unique names in the list then). Thanks in advance for any updates!

That doesn’t even make sense considering it is able to retain a name from a previous install. Could you explain in further detail why its so hard? Just saying its hard and we are looking into it for whats now approaching a year, seems extremely ridiculous. I have 2 lifetime passes so its not like I haven’t supported you guys, it would just be nice to have an answer or a fix. I am tempted to figure out a way to install an old .apk change the name and then update but I am really hoping something like that isn’t necessary.
