2D viewing of a 3d source Kodi does this. If it is too much to do this in the transcoding then how about an option in the optimized version conversion process?

+1, need for ipad syncing and viewing, would hate to download both versions everytime.
Why not just have 2 libraries. One for 3D content and one for normal 2D movies?
This is what I do and it makes cake out of syncing.
Is this still an issue? I have an iPad app (VRPlayer) that plays SBS movies both in SBS (VR mode) and just Left Hand Side mode to allow you to watch 3D movies on 2D devices. It’s literally just cropping the frame and expanding to fill the screen. Hardly any processor time required, no transcoding - in fact it is just the client that does the work. This allows you to have a mix of 3D and 2D content, with the client (and more importantly, the user) being source agnostic.
