3d 2d conversion tab or sbs

Was curious if there was a possible future option that could allow the choice of haveing a 3d movies in plex played in just 2d.  by telling plex to play only the left or right or the top or bottom.  I have 3d home on the projector and tv, but also have a Roku with plex on it at the girlfriends place and it would be nice to be able to have access to my full library 3d and 2d without haveing to make double copies of all my movies before hand.

Thanks

Craig

good idea, dont know if it is possible tho

Yes I was not sure if it would be simple or not.  Sure nothing is impossible, but with streaming and transcoding and then adding in removing of 3d could possible complicate things.  I know playing in KMPlayer or other such players on the computer i have the option to choose left right or top bottom when playing 3d videos such as MKV format..  I didn't know if it was a simple switch, or if it needed a special decoding for every video format to remove the 3d, which would cause issues if every format was not supported.  But we can all hope.

It would just be a matter of cropping the video, scaling the result to the correct size, then converting that result to the proper codec, all of which FFMPEG can do.  The Plex transcoder is based on FFMPEG so it should be able to perform these steps as well.  I just don't know if it can be done all in one step, which would be required.

That would be IMO relatively easy to implement even with the new Plex transcoder.

A simple command line for a SBS 1080 video could look like this:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Plex\Plex Media Server\PlexNewTranscoder.exe" -i G:/Test/test.mkv -filter:v crop=960:1080:0:0 -crf 18 -aspect 16:9 G:/Test/out.mkv"

"Crop" eliminates the right side and "aspect" stretches the video to it's original format ;)

Cool.  But how about codecs and transport type, this assumes the current codecs are not direct playable and needs to be transcoded into the fiel Plex uses to stream.

The filter is applied to the input stream and you can add codec options. I just tried out this commandline. it works, and it's fast enough to transcode on the fly on my setup (>100fps):

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Plex\Plex Media Server\PlexNewTranscoder.exe" -i G:/Test/Test.mp4 -filter:v crop=960:1080:0:0 -codec:v libx264 -crf 18 -preset "veryfast" -codec:a copy -aspect 16:9 -strict -2 G:/Test/out.mkv"

I believe the other options needed by PMS can also be added

+1 for this feature, xbmc gotham just this 1 3d file can be played either 3d or 2d from my understanding just using 1 of the chanels like swtiching off 3d on 3d tv just displays as 2d, surely plex devs realise how silly it is to have multiple sources of same file just so non 3d device can watch a file.

My server isn’t capable of transcoding. So an option where direct play is still available would be good.

PLEASE

LOL.  That second link is this thread.

Does it really matter? People should do a better job of checking to see if a feature has already been requested. I've seen this topic come up several times and I haven't been here long. Couldn't care less about this feature, but I wish it would get implemented so people would stop requesting it.

If you search for 3D you get this in return: "One or all of your search keywords were below 3 characters..."

If you search for 3D you get this in return: "One or all of your search keywords were below 3 characters..."

Riiight  3D + 2D = 4 characters.

Riiight  3D + 2D = 4 characters.

ROTFL!

In a query that would make either 5 characters or 2+1+2 but never 4...

I can confirm that playing 3D content in 2D works with Plex Media Server together with XBMC13/PLEXbmc as client and it doesn't seem to put additional load on the CPU either.

For 3D-movies to be recognized properly you would have to add something like "3D.SBS" or "3D.TAB" to the name of the file, for example: "Captain America The Winter Soldier (2014).3D.SBS.mp4"

Use XBMC 14 (nightly builds) instead of 13 if you need support for h265 as well.

So for now, if you need this feature there is a working alternative.
