I think a simple DB sync feature could be:
If Svr 1 (PMS) shutsdown the now closed DB will be automated uploaded to Google drive for example.
If Svr 2 (PMS) will be started then the uploaded DB will be downloaded automated and overwrites the old DB on Svr 2 and therefore you have all the watch Status etc in sync.
This means that you have identical PMS installs on both Svr. In my Case then two SSDs.
(+ you have the DB for backup purposes on Google drive in case HDD or SSD dies)
In the meantime…
Plex has a scheduled backup every three days. You can direct that to a remote drive or to a local copy of a dropbox, onedrive, box folder. I’m blanking but–I don’t think google ever released a localized copy of google shares. At least then you’ve got the backup off the HDD that might fail and require a rebuild.
You could pull this down to a second server with a script. But the backup is clearly not the same as a active DB file. I don’t know if you could just copy the files from an inactive server to another server. They would need identical setups and identical access to your movies/tv shows (same drive letters).
I back mine up to the NAS storage in my house, which is also backed up every night. I would like Plex to make an additional backup at every shutdown. Since DBs can’t be in use when backing them up typically. True synchronization is incredibly expensive tech for DBs.
i have a similar request and someone said it seemed too similar to this and would probably get shut down, so i am here to put in my two cents and vote for this.
here was my idea.
I would love to be able to set up another pc with PMS as a backup for my main server without having to redo all the metadata stuff such as fixing matches, merging artist/albums, changing tags etc. and i would like to not have to do new ones twice. i would love if when setting up PMS on a new system be able to tell it that it is a backup of another server and it would automatically download all the necessary info for all the metadata from my main server and be able to update that information on every scan. Basically i could set my current pc as “Main Server” and any other device running PMS i could set it as “Backup Server” then any “Backup Server” will pull the metadata info from the “Main Server” and on every scan any “Backup Server” will update the metadata from the “Main Server”.
my reasoning for this is that there have been times where my pc hosting PMS has problems that puts it in the shop for many weeks and am then without all my media and/or plexamp features like artist radio stations, guest DJs etc. this way i could have all of that and not have to spend another year editing the metadata all over again and editing new items twice.
