Please add the option for the androidtv platform to use an external player like in the regular android app.
Had to return my nexus player because direct play just wouldn’t work in plex, but I plan on buying a Razer Forge TV or Nvidia Shield console when they come out, and really want to use plex on them.
I believe being able to use another player would help fix most issues.
please i beg you add an option on android tv to use an external player. jellyfin enables it and it works! i know there may be a problem with counting playing time and watched/unwatched. but i’m absolutely confident no one that needs it will experience any inconvenience. i use vlc through dlna/upnp and it works great. but i’m so tired of using that protocol, i want to use native client to browse through my library and play stuff via external player(((
fully working player like vlc that has no problems with rewind and has audio/sub-delay is much more important than difficulties with played/unplayed situation. i’m pretty sure everyone who is in need of an external player knows how to click ‘watched’. for crying out loud, you allow it in mobile version

I knew this had been requested for years, but had no idea it went back this far. Plex devs, please let us select an external player for Android TV. I do not understand why this is not a thing already.
Big boi android media players like the Zidoo Z9X Pro get detected as Android TV, and because of this incomprehensible limitation, the Plex app therefore cannot use their superior player. Make it an advanced feature that’s hidden by default if you’re worried about increased customer support, but let those of us who know what we’re doing use an external player.
