So, for example when subtitles are in an unsupported format, the whole video gets transcoded with subtitles burned into the video. Why not just transcode/convert the subtitles to a format that is supported on the client?
When casting to Chromecast, anything with subtitles is transcoded by Plex, but it doesn’t have to if you just convert the subtitles to a format that is supported by the Chromecast? It really puts a strain on my CPU, and it means that I can’t really have multiple users using Plex with Chromecast…

Subtitles are definitely not ready for prime time in Plex
All Subtitles served up by Plex cause transcode of some sort on ALL platforms. (Except maybe Nvidia I think I have read)
This is ridiculous and makes using subtitles prohibitively CPU intensive, especially for 1080p streams.
4K with subtitles… FORGET IT!!!
For this reason, I’ve been using Emby lately (it already has what I’m requesting here). But lately, I’ve had some really bad issues with playing Emby videos on Chromecast and my SHIELD, so that’s why I’m back on Plex…
Most my videos are 1080p, so yeah… Subtitles eat my CPU.
In my opinion… there are SO MANY things that Plex could get right.
However it seems they are WAY to busy playing with NEW features and gizmos, OSes… etc… they do not seem to have time to focus on their core business/function. And lately, it seems they are spending more time fixing stuff they break when trying to add all this fluff than getting down to core functionality and reliability.
Well… Let’s see. I have a few issues with Plex, that I’ve posted about here on forums. I’ll give it a chance to get fixed (at least outright bugs). But I am very tempted to just go back to Emby. They usually reply within a day or at least a few days, and often upload new versions with fixes within a few days as well.
To be fair I didn’t report my current issues at Emby. So I might just go and do that now, and keep Plex only as a backup.
Don’t get me wrong. I Love Plex.
Would not trade it.
Hopefully, Plex will get their act together… (But I do not hold my breath)
Lot’s of brilliant talent there. Seems to me somewhat less than stellar management…
