[Feature Request] - Proper continuous/automatic play for TV shows

I've been using Plex for a couple of years now, and I've been waiting for a proper implementation of this feature. I have tried searching these forums, and to my understanding there is some barebone version of this in the web app and home theater app, but it's archaic and unintuive.  Playlists kind of work this way, but are way too much of a hassle. What we need is something simple. This is a feature that deserves to be easy to find and use, at least across the major platforms. (iOs, android, Chromecast, Roku and desktop/web clients I suppose, I don't have the install base numbers).

What I want is that after playing an episode of a TV show, Plex will play the next episode automatically, maybe with a few seconds break, and continue to do so until I stop the video. This should of course be based on the episode I'm watching, and it should play the next episodes in the correct order. This can either be something you "activate" everytime you start watching something, or it could be a setting you can enable or disable by default in the app settings. The point is that it needs to be simple, intuitive and consistent across platforms.

I of course understand that manually selecting a new episode isn't much of a hassle for a lot of people. But to really get that comfortable couch viewing that cable TV still is the best at providing, finding your keyboard/smart phone/pad/remote every 20 minutes when watching your favourite sitcom really isn't ideal. It breaks up the flow and forces the viewer to make a decision every time you finish an episode. A lot of times while binge watching you don't want to have to make that choice ... :P Netflix understands this.

Am I the only one who really wants this? It's easily my most wanted feature.

If you choose to watch a TV show or season, or start playback from 'On Deck' in web, PHT, Windows, Windows Phone, iOS, or Android then you will get this behaviour. This is part of the Play Queue functionality:

https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/202188298-Play-Queues

We specifically _don't_ start a play queue if you start from an individual episode so you have the option of either way of watching. You should be able to see this behaviour by hitting the play button at the other levels.

Hope that helps!

Hmm. On iOS, if I try to press play on either the TV show level, or season level, I get the error "No Active Play Queues - Go play some media to create one". On android it was different. First I found out that I had an old playlist, that  overwrote my press of the play button on season or show level, and started the same episode every time. I deleted the playlist, which did not do anything strangely enough. After I force quit the app and tried again, I managed to kind of make it work from the season level. I pressed play in the right upper corner, and an episode of the correct season started playing, and another one started playing after that. BUT, when I first hit the play button in the season level, the app chose to play a totally random episode from the correct season. It was an episode that was already marked as "watched", and even more strangely, it wasn't even the first episode in the season, or the show for that matter. It was the one before the next episode I hadn't seen yet.

So, something fishy is going on here, and the feature is either not really implemented or it does not really work. Gotta say I'm somewhat frustrated, I've used a lot of time trying to find a solution to this on the internet, and then even more trying to get a feature that's supposedly in the apps already, but is not properly explained in any of the support sites (the section called "implicit queuing, which I assume is the one you're talking about only mentions music , and is quite confusing), to even work. Also, this feature is completely worthless for TV shows if it doesn't factor in the seen/unseen states of the different episodes, as it doesn't seem to judging by the fact that your support article only talks about music.

I'm not expecting you to whip out a solution to this overnight, but what I hoped for with this thread was that you would maybe acknowledge that this feature isn't really there yet, and that you're at least considering working on it.

As stated, I know that it's possible to create a playlist, and then press play on that, but it's way too much hassle to create different playlists for every show you're watching. I just want the netflix feature, hopefully without the "are you still watching" prompt every three episodes, or at least an option to turn it off.

Cheers! :)

Thanks for the reply. The Play Queues features are definitely implemented :), and are a separate (but related) feature to Playlists. Apologies if that's caused confusion.

The buttons you're hitting in iOS/Android sound like they're the 'now playing' buttons that will return you to whatever play queue you were previously playing. You need to create a Play Queue by playing back a season, show or library. In Android this is the orange 'Play' button next to shuffle. Or you can select the dropdown by clicking on the '...' on a poster and choosing 'Play' fro there. In iOS you can get these options with a long hold on an item.

The apps should be trying to 'Play Unwatched' for the season and show level. I'd suggest you double check your watched status on the episodes, but if that's amiss then please feel free to follow up and we'll look into it some more.

Web and Chromecast implement the Post Play screen, and have functionality to prevent automatically playing every single episode (in case you fall asleep :D). This doesn't feature in the other apps, yet.

Apologies if you're frustrated about this. Hopefully some of that will help you out.

I've found that when I hit play at the show or season level, Plex will play the first video file, even if watched.

i.e. I have season 8, 9, and 10.  I have watched all episodes, nothing but the most recent episode is marked as unwatched.  If I hit play from the Show level, it starts from the first available episode (s08e01) and not the newest unwatched (s10e10).

I'm running PHT 1.3.3.427-1fa83b88 and PMS 0.9.11.5.774-760cb52

I also find that the on deck gets screwed up if you port the video to chrome cast from plex web browser, or if you port the video from a phone plex app to chromecast.

Would also be nice if the show gets market as watched even if the user exits out after the movie ends and the credits begin lol.

Early 2021 clean-up: implemented (play queue, auto play)
