When finishing watching an episode, have a pop-up with a countdown to auto play next episode (Netflix style). However, have it ‘smart’ so if began playback from ‘On Deck’ it would auto play next on deck item. If began playback within a TV season it would auto play next episode. For movies it could auto play or recommend related movies.
I know this can be done by setting up playlists, but I love the mindlessness of this feature on Netflix.
I would love this feature for Tv Series and or Movie Series/Collection only tho.
I know that when you watch a TV show in the Windows 8 App it will auto play the next ep for you. Haven't tried it with movies yet.
They have this feature on the chromecast already (at least when cast from an IOS device) its great!
Problem is of course when you dont want to watch the next episode and you have to scramble to unlock your device in 10 seconds to stop it :P but hey! nothings perfect
Plex Web and the Amazon Fire TV (android) apps do this as well (similar to the Windows 8 app and streaming to Chromcast as mentioned above). It just depends on where you press 'Play.'
Basically what I believe happens is that if you press play on the episode in the On Deck list (or from the Show or Season screens), it automatically creates a now playing playlist of that show. From there it autoplays the next episodes.
I believe Plex Web stops eventually with inactivity, though I'm not sure what the time limit or episode count is. I can't say whether or not this happens for other clients.
I agree this should exist across all clients, but what client(s) are you specifically referring to?
Also, if you want to watch one episode at a time, you enter the preplay screen for that particular episode and press 'Play' there.
Yup. This exists as the post play screen in web and chromecast right now - https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/202605013-Play-Queue-Post-Play-Screen
We give a little more time on Chromecast, so you can unlock your phone in time :) But in general you can trigger the playback of a single episode by navigating to just that episode first. If you play from 'On Deck' or playback a season, then yes - a play queue is generated for the remaining unwatched episodes.
For movies you can do this with either playlists, or by playing back a filtered library.

I primarily use the iOS version of Plex as well as Plex HT. I'm guessing this feature just doesn't exist there yet. Great to see it exists, but features really should be 'all device ready'. Love the app though, really. Looking forward to other device integration then!!
one side note, which may be a 'feature' is with me plex will play x number of episodes then stop until i hit play in the web interface. a way of turning this off would be greate..

If you play on iOS form the on Deck it auto plays the next episode but with no warning, so will play an entire show if left alone (been complained about before in the iOS thread)
any knowledge of this coming to the Opera TV apps? (Vizio) thanks!
I have said this in another topic too - i really think this is a good idea, and should be implemented that it also appear if you only play one episode and not are pressing the "Play unwatched" button.
You could make it a setting you could toggle if you wanted, so if you want it to autoplay next, or if you don't want to.
Auto Play feature should be available whether or not if you are playing your media from "On Deck" or not (or platform versus another). Seems bit odd that a feature should be available through one mean and not the other when really it's accessing the same content in the end. (but then again, I guess the fragmentation of features among different clients are more of the bigger issue of Plex.)
If this is implemented PLEASE make it optional... not like the Youtube app on Roku where I fall asleep watching a channel and wake up and its still playing. No way to turn off.
As implemented in Web and Chromecast, this has some smarts to avoid playing through all your shows when you fall asleep, but doesn't nag you every video either. When we implement this in other apps it will have the same logic.
Thanks!

Ok, I usually only use PHT and iOS, but I figured I would give this a try via PlexWeb. Using PlexWeb I just went to an episode in the middle of a season. (Episode 2 of Rick and Morty) and when the episode finished it took me back to the Episode 2 page. If I were to have this implemented the way I want (and I think to those who are interested in this feature here), Plex should always assume that if you hit play on a episode, the next episode should follow it automatically. It's not intuitive to press play on the whole season when you're already a few episodes in. Adding a few filters, or manually queuing the show doesn't make sense either. This feature is what I think really helped netflix out. It encouraged binge watching. I don't necessarily plan on watching the following episode, but maybe it ended in a cliff hanger and I now want to watch.
Is this current thread considered implemented? Should I add a new thread that covers these enhancements to Autoplaying the next episode?
I would like to see this in TV, but not in movies.

True. Maybe Movie collections, but I'd be ok with just TV
If you press play on a TV show it will play from the next item On Deck. Which should be what you want a lot of the time (I think). We made the change a couple of weeks back (https://forums.plex.tv/topic/46075-plex-web/?p=940585). Previously it would play from the first unwatched item, which isn't quite the same.
We made this UX decision since it was the least surprising behaviour when playing back an episode, while providing the ability to watch all episodes. As you point out, it's also consistent with movies.
It's a must for PHT.

How do I get this to work. I've never had this happen on any client?
