I too would like to see this feature in Plex’s native interface.
I listen to classical music, where you want to hear a complete symphony, then another symphony, not assorted movements of random symphonies. I’d like a shuffle-by-album that would shuffle all the albums in the library, the albums on a manually-created playlist, albums in a particular genre or with a particular tag… by a particular artist…
Anville, thanks for shuffle-by-album-plug-in. It works properly on my setup. But again, I’d like finer-level control over what to include in the shuffle playlist.
And all this gets me nowhere if my DLNA client (Denon Heos) can’t see and use (and shuffle) playlists.
Any update on this?
I’d dearly love this feature too.
+1 bump on this
Yep, shuffle by album is well overdue, please add this
+1
This feature was suggested years ago and is a pretty major feature for an audio player to have. I want it for the same reason as the original poster and it’s kept me from using Plex as a primary media player for audio.
I think it’s importance to be implemented within Plex has been increased as a result of Plex being an Alexa Skill.
Amazon 's Echos, Dots etc are audio only devices which go well with a media server such as Plex. However the experience is certainly lowered as a result of not being able to ask a Plex to play a random album.
I am currently using the Shuffle By Album channel to achieve this but it is a work around and Plex need to streamline this.
+100
I would buy another lifetime subscription for this feature.
So far this feature request has only received 19 votes, yet more people have asked for this feature.
The forum rules state that just leaving a “+1” message is pointless. What everyone needs to do is to “like” the first post in this thread.
Let’s get that number a lot higher and, hopefully, get Plex to implement it!
For Plex Pass members, there is another thread in the the member-only feature request forum: https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/250066/feature-request-shuffle-by-whole-album-in-order#latest
Not sure what it’s worth, but if you want this feature, go add a ‘like’ to the parent post of that thread too.
(Wow, just noticed that I started this thread almost 7 years ago!)
There may finally be a glimmer of light at the end of this tunnel!! I posted a question on Medium today about gapless playback and album shuffle on the new Plexamp player, and got a response from Elan…
And I quote; “…and album shuffle is coming in a future update.”
If you’re running the latest beta server, and you’re using Plexamp, you’ll now have the ability to shuffle albums. You even get a cool key combo to skip to the next album: Shift+CommandOrControl+Option+Right. (Our other apps are adding station support as well.)

Hey @elan , that’s great news!
Plexamp (desktop player) isn’t really my use case, but look forward to support on other clients!
(As as side note, I did just try Plexamp on my Ubuntu system, but I couldn’t figure out how change the library from “Audiobooks” to “Music”. Maybe there are some key commands, or a hidden menu?)

It’s a tray menu at the moment; apparently in some cases you need to install another package or set an environment variable to get it to appear.
@elan That did it.
nohup env XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP=Unity ./plexamp-1.0.4-x86_64.AppImage
Yay! Cool, I can cast to my Pi-based PMP! Next step is figure out how to cast to my Chromecast speaker group for whole-house Plex stations

There will be an rPI headless version of Plexamp as well, with all the audio niceties…
