Curious about this, as I’ve never used the feature myself; you set it up, and then if you don’t like the album you can skip by whole album at a time? Is there actual custom UI for the mode in players?
I would like to see this feature as well! More an album listener myself like the OP.
As for how it works: It shuffles to a different album after the last song of one. Otherwise it’s like normal, you skip to the next song in the album. I know this from foobar2000, no custom UI there (but there is not really a fixed UI in foobar2000 since it’s all modular) just like a button/drop down menu for the mode, like there is in PlexAmp already.
In iTunes, the UX is similar to what thetysos described. I just hit the “shuffle” button again if I’m not in the mood for the album that was selected (which happens quite frequently by the way, downside of having quite diverse musical taste) and a new album is selected. Otherwise next/previous switches tracks within the album.
Dope! Though a button would be even better - to filter first by whatever you like (artist, genre, etc.) and shuffle those albums then. Or even album shuffle a (smart-)playlist.
Looking forward to test this anyway
Any chance plexamp playlist functionality (Time Travel Radio, and Random Album Radio) could be added to the mobile app and perhaps the Android Auto interface? They’re great options to get listening quickly while on the go, before I become paralyzed by my indecisiveness.
I would also love to see this feature pop up in other clients. I use the web-client extensively at work.
Would be nice to create complex filters and them hit a shuffle album button.
I also love Random Album Radio! I think it has one important problem, however.
I’ve noticed that Random Album Radio uses a smart crossfade between tracks, rather than merely using gapless playback. I assume this because Plexamp thinks it’s in a shuffle mode (which it technically is, I guess), rather than album mode.
As a result, tracks on the same album bleed into one another in a way they aren’t supposed to on the original recording, and also the last track of one album and the first track of the next album blend into each other. The latter is probably annoying to people who like albums that end with a fade-out or a few seconds of silence (‘a breather’, you might call it).
Instead of the current playback logic (crossfade for playlists/radio; gapless for albums), could the logic be: crossfade for playlists/radio excluding Random Album radio; gapless for albums AND Random Album radio?
