Would it be possible to have a file bot plugin in plex to work with meta agents to help scrape and appropriately name/rename files I believe this would make plex a more complete media solution
Sure, it is possible. But since renaming files goes against Plex’s policy to not modify the original file, I doubt you will ever see an official plugin from Plex.
Shame as it would decrease the number of posts complaining about tv shows not showing correctly and insisting the followed naming convention even thought they didn’t
There is nothing stopping someone from creating the plugin themselves. I just wouldn’t hold out for Plex to do it.
There was even a request to have Plex rename files after the fact based on what was matched. Another potentially useful feature but again it goes against Plex’s policy.
Pity… but fair enough
I am not sure what the plus would be here, currently I have filebot as the gate keeper for all my media files, so anything that comes into my plex library goes through filebot, it has a near perfect hit rate for me. I am just saying I’m not sure where the plex integration would be valuable?
I would never want Plex to rename or change the files in my library in any way…
For one reason scraping and allowing a computer to make a match in unreliable especially when there are multiple titles that have the same name but are released in different years.
Filebot is good provided there is human intervention cause if you just accept the auto matching you could severely mess up a library.
I personally manage everything that goes into my library and correct filenames accordingly.
I use much more than just Plex with my library (I also use XBMC) and I would hate to have the two of them fighting for control of the same library or have one renaming files that will then show up as new files in some other system I am running.
I have 16+ TBs of Media and I don’t want anything editing those files without my strict oversight.
That said I’m no opposed to someone creating an add on that does this but I do forewarn them you are asking for trouble if you let a computer decide what to name your files for you on it’s own.
