File format

Hi,

So I have a large collection of movies & TV Shows all on disc (Blu-Ray), that i am looking to import into my plex library at last. What i am wondering is what is the best format to import these in is it best to have them as MKV files or MP4.

I am looking to try and keep them at the full size for now 1:1 ripping process. I know this will make them Hugh files but i dont want to lose the quality with compressed files but also want them available to watch whilst I’m out of the house. I can’t use the port forwarding option on my router at the minute but that’s another issue (Changing providers soon) so i keep being told my server isn’t powerful enough to process the MKV files i already have ( Is this a conversion issue as I’m watching on an iPad)
This is why i was looking at MP4 format

Can anyone recommend some software to do this. I’m aware of Make M*V which would work. I can’t find anything decent for the MP4 process as it wants to rip and compress the files instead of a 1:1 conversion.

Handbrake should be able to convert your files if this is needed.

So far I haven’t had any problems to play DVD or Blu-Ray based MKV files on my iPhone or iPad – even with image based subtitles – no transcoding needed. Is there anything fancy about your files that could cause such kind of hiccup?
Did you configure the Plex app to use the legacy player? This will be less capable to play such files natively…

I haven’t really looked into it to be honest. Even though ive had plex pass sometime now it was more of a gift and hasn’t really been used to its full potential until now. I am still working my way around it and trying to find what works best for what I have. Once i have figured that out then i can really knuckle down to organising my library properly instead of it being a bit of a mess at the minute
