Filmography

So I import a film into Plex server and it downloads the metadata and poster, etc. most of the time it appears in the filmography for the actor and director, etc. but occasionally the imported film isn’t in the filmography for those people. It is like Plex import is drawing from a different database source than Filmography. What’s up with that? Even if I add the TXDB or IMDB number to the file name it still doesn’t appear in the filmography. This is a rare occurrence but it happens from time to time. What’s up?

Filmography is indeed from a different source…. Plex isn’t storing all that details on your local server.

Instead, it’ll show the online information and the client app will only lookup the items which are also in your server(s) to highlight them.
If that lookup times out, the local item might not be highlighted.

Aaaaah.

I was always curious why I add content and the filmography marks that content as available - but mostly not.

Be sure to check the support article for this topic https://support.plex.tv/articles/discover-credits/. Also review the FAQ.

Thanks, is there any attempt to add that missing film to the filmography or is it just dependent upon the mystery list that Plex draws upon to construct the filmography?

Does Plex attempt to read credits with OCR when it adds a film? Just curious about that.

Plex uses the metadata from online sources, usually TMDb/IMDb and the likes for their own metadata repository.
That data contains details who was involved in a project as cast and crew. Filmography is then just listing all the movies/shows where the given person was involved.
