+1 and ditto to everything dmjossel said.
Plugin support seems to be gone everywhere even on platforms that still show the option.
What are people turning to instead of Plex?

Leave plugins alone!!! No way in hell is there only 2% usage. If that’s the case, web shows and news addons accumulate for something like 0.2% usage!!!
Oh no, I watch the plugin channels all the time, I will miss CNN, CW, NBC, ABC the most. Big Sighs. So many of the Roku apps demand that you have cable to use them, like CNN and History and HGTV. I will be lost. And the channels were advertised as a great part of Plex. That’s why I’m here. Now all it will do is play my d/l’ed movies. I want CHANNELS!!!
Add another to the list. Without plugin support, Plex has basically become useless to me!
I truly miss the plugin support for PLEX on Roku. Please bring back the legacy plugin support.
For those who rely on plugins for content there is one word I’d say:
Kodi
Don’t forget the word “browser”, as in web browser; to load the pages of those sites, individually.
It’s not easy menu’d like Plex, but, that’s where Plex plug-ins got the content.
The trakt plugin is the one that hurts me the most. If I have to rebuild my Library I’ll lose all of my watch statuses.
I think a lot of people are going to miss Trakt
Plex still works on Amazon Firestick so far. The Plex app on Roku is horrible. I’m moving it to the bottom or may just delete it altogether. I used it primarily for BBC iPlayer. and figure skating on CBC.
I second. PLEASE bring back plug-ins for the sake of my marriage. All my wife watches is network stuff, which is not available where I live because I don’t have off-the-air and my “locals” have not negotiated agreements with any of the streaming services. Plex was my only solution that doesn’t cost me $10/mo/channel. Now, I’m SOL.
Try PlayOn.
Or depending on your hardware, install Kodi (and the Plex addin) for all kinds of 3rd party content.
Your wife will love you long time. LOL
@cayars - I’m curious, and though I could go google searching, figure since I’m involving Plex in a small way, thought I’d ask here/you.
Most of my clients are Roku’s and Smart TVs. What I believe to be non-Kodi hosting devices.
If I install Kodi and get it up and going on my main PMS server, then the “Kodi add-in”, does it act to make Kodi a remotely accessible server?
Or am I totally missing what Kodi is, and what the Plex add-in does? (and, will the Kodi Plex add-in eventually disappear too when Plex server drops plug-ins?
Kodi ONLY runs on the device it’s installed on. PC. Android, Android TV, etc
You won’t usually be able to install it on a TV or on a Roku.
Nut shell view:
When you install Kodi it’s for THAT device only. It’s not client server in any way shape or form. You can install Kodi on say 4 Android TV devices (think Shield TVs) and point them at your media for local playback and add 3rd party addons but you need to make the additions of those 3rd party addons on EVERY device since they are independent from each other.
The Plex or Emby addon for Kodi allows Kodi it to communicate directly with the server. Now when you watch a movie or TV show it marks it watched. It shows you the meta data as on the server. It allows you to point several different Kodi clients to the Emby/Plex server and keep your watched status in tact while giving you Plex/Emby features besides just Kodi.
Think of it as a “hybrid” system if you will. Kodi isn’t the easiest software to setup the FIRST TIME but it much easier on round 2 or 3. It’s just different.
This reminds me.
I haven’t looked at Plex for Kodi in a long time. For a while it was my go to client on LibreElec embedded.
It worked really well, but sadly just seemed to die a death in development.
Thanks for the description.
As I feared, Kodi has no remote access as it stands. It’s a rich local app.
That’s a great way to describe it @JamminR.
It was just another box to check. they checked it off and moved on to the next box.
I can’t believe they removed plug-ins! This make me incredibly sad as I used this extensively. I’ve been a huge Plex supporter for many years and this really makes me think of alternatives now… ■■■■.
