Forcing remote viewers into lower quality video file

I looked for an answer to this but since the search terms are generic, I wasnt able to find what I’m looking for. With the advent and popularity of 4k, most of my movies are being stored in this quality. The problem comes when multiple people want to watch 4k movies simultaneously remotely - the transcoder is pegged out. Does anyone have any ideas for storing movies in both 4k and maybe something like 720/1080 as well, and forcing them to the lesser resolution to save on CPU/GPU transcoding? Thanks!

how much bandwidth do you have, the more people using direct play, the less transcoding required.

If you have different versions you could split the libraries and only allow access to the HD over the 4K ones.

Thank you for the response. I do have 1GB up but I’m also at the mercy of what they have their client set to for quality as well as their download speeds. That’s a good idea of splitting out the libraries. I also found the optimized options which I might use to pre-transcode some of the 4k versions and to see what that does.

Issue discussed ad nauseum here - promises from Plex to fix client apps but nothing as yet
