Thanks for putting this together
I don't suppose you could make alist of the steps to properly change it to use a differant user than was used to install plex?
The info in post #4 should be sufficient.
When you install the service in the admin account, you give it the username you want to run the service in. All that is left is making sure that Plex Media Server does not run in the Admin Install Account whenever you do an install / upgrade / repair of Plex Media Server. So never leave 'L…
“post 4” URL/hyperlink is dead.
Ok, currently I have my media on my D drive (second vHD) just thinking about where plex stores info to know where to look for the media
thanks
There are two separate things:
1. Plex Media Server data
2. The actual Media files
The media files you add to library sections when you create the library sections
The Plex Media Server data is created and maintained by Plex Media Server
The default place (for windows 7 onwards) is:
c:\users\username\appdata\local\Plex Media Server

Can't kill/restart process on server, sometimes 2 instances of PMS
AppData/Local/Plex Media Server has read rights using install account and one used for services
Are you having different user for install from one you run PMS Service under?
If you are, then the auto start would be having in the install account leading to 2 instances.
See my post #4
The registry setting is for the user account and would be different depending on which session loads up regedit
See bullet 4 in things I checked in my original post. I did ensure that same account was used to install PMS as well as launch the service(s).

Let me know or if the existing logs tell you smart folks something.
Some slow access to the database - 1 second for 5 items. Previously this suggestion was given:
Some Plug-in timeouts - this normally fixes a lot of such issues : https://plexapp.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/201119258-Resetting-System-and-Framework-bundles
Issue with scanning some media : may be setting verbose logging in PMS Settings / Advanced would give more info relating to the media file concerned

Thanks. PMS logs not available for this one. PMS 0.9.9.9 it was crashing before getting as far as logging anything. A few users got it to work by re-download but I have not as the download has the Digital Signature and is the right size.
The thread is here https://forums.plex.tv/topic/105322-error-on-launching-pms-999/
So if we get this sort of problem and it is obvious when it happens we just need to stop the service and launch it manually to troubleshoot
Yeah, that's what I'd do.

I’m literally just scrolling through the thread and looking for any link that links to another forum post… They are all dead from what I can tell.
I understand it’s a big thread, but my point of this thread is that this probably isn’t an isolated issue, just trying to help DEVs out by revealing a flaw in the upgrade process (potentially). I’m sure this problem exists on older threads elsewhere too.
