Future of Plexamp on Raspberry Pi?

Commenting to show my support for this

I already love the improvements to Plexamp/Metadata and it is what I’ve hoped for, for years now.

Excited to see what you guys come up with!

Hopefully you wont hit too many snags working on this.

This issue is pretty much the only reason i unsubbed from plexpass and i would really love to start throwing money at you again!

Wasn’t that the initial trigger for Plexamp-v2.0.0-rPi-beta?
You could call it ā€œwork life balanceā€

Commenting to show my support for this as well. This is my Plex missing link!

I started out using Plex only for movies, using UPnP for music, but the convenience of using Plex for music as well got me hooked on using Plex for all my music. The revamped Plexamp client really helped keep me on Plex for music. I run Plexamp on 2 PCs, my phone, and via Android Auto in the car. I can play music to my TV-based HT speakers via Plex on Roku, but the only way to play Plex music to my stereo is via a Chromecast Audio. If that thing croaks I’ll have to resort to cobbling together a Chromecast with HDMI converters, etc. behind my stereo. I did a trial run of Roon, but I really don’t want two separate in-home server systems for movies and music, especially when Plex otherwise handles music well.

Plexamp on a RasPi with a DAC hat will seal the deal for me. I’ll immediately deploy 3 of them.

Really awesome to see all the engagement here. I’d like to add my +1 for this. I’d like to be able to cast to a raspberry PI as a streamer to my home stereo.

Specifically the raspberryPI DAC streamer will be headless. I’d like to see a small plugin for an existing OS like Moode Player or Volumio so I can stay inside the Plex ecosystem and can just cast that stream to a player.

Here’s a comment from the guys at Moode Player
ā€œPlexamp is not Open Source and so not possible to include support for it in moOde.ā€ 2019
https://moodeaudio.org/forum/showthread.php?tid=1113&highlight=plex

Not a lot of action over at Volumio

I really don’t want to buy Roon when I’m already happy as a clam here with Plex!

I would LOVE for ā€œPlex streamerā€ to just show up in this Volumio Plugins available list. This would be so I can STAY in my Plex-verse.

----or show up in Moode player plugin list: whatever! Set it up, get back to Plex, and fahgetaboutit.

Fantastic. As a music lover I appreciate having the ability of a gapless (!) playing unit that I can control from another device. Plexamp has all the potential. Looking forward to it!

Just wondered if there is any further update from Plex on this, even if it’s ā€œwe’ve not forgotten about itā€ ?

28 days later, we’ve not forgotten about it.

Very excited by the ongoing progress here. Keep up the efforts!

adding myself to this topic as I’m very interested in having a headless plexamp player.

@Elan Just want to chime in an express my gratitude to you and your team. You guys rock and my impression is PlexAmp is a bit of a side project. Given the progress you have make with the media server its impressive you all are even finding time to work on something audio focused. I’ve been a Plex Pass user for years but have recently been dabbling in hifi. Looking forward to what you guys put together so I can have all my media play exclusively through Plex something that no others offer.

Thanks Joe, very kind of you!

When you are ready for beta testers, I am happy to help. I had Plexamp running on several Pi3’s and 4’s but one of the last server updates killed their ability to connect to the server/music libraries.

Would love to just see the current PlexAMP code have an ARM version that runs on the standard pi OS. I hate flatpak but if that’s all you’ll give and not full debian distro so be it. Given that it appears to be built on React Native or something similar shouldn’t this be straight forward?

I can already get Airplay (shairplay) functionality into a PI and there are alternatives for Android too, so having plexamp as a headless target is very much less important at this point. I’m trying to get to a touch screen on walls with plexamp and Home Assistant, which I suspect is what a huge group of people are trying to do too. (and if you wanted to create a plugin for Home Assistant that integrated plexamp into the home assistant lovelace I’m sure people would cheer you on)

Kickin’ in on this as well

Bought a PI and aimed a headless Plex client install… seems like I need to wait more.
So I am also looking very much forward to this and wanted to show my support with this comment as well!

Any chance of an update from Plex on the current progress with this please ? :grinning:

since you asked nicely!

we’re wrapping up the http server/controllability work, and then we just need to ā€œdecapitateā€ the new app to let it run headless. Q1 would be a pet solid bet.

Thanks for the reply, much appreciated and looking forward to

That’s great! How about an ARM build of Plexamp that we can run on a headed version of the pi on a touch screen?
