Future of Plexamp on Raspberry Pi?

You’re confusing two completely different things. x86 and arm are incompatible CPU architectures. They can both have 32bit and 64bit versions. Whether a 64 bit cpu can run 32 bit versions of software largely depends on the operating system supporting it. A 64 bit OS requires a 64 bit cpu. Many 64 bit CPUs can run a 32 bit OS though they will not be able to take full advantage of the hardware. 64 bit hardware has been available in the Raspberry Pi platform since the model 3 in 2016. That leaves a lot of possible hardware hosts for Plexamp on Pi.

OK, I’m officially confused about the plans for Pi now. Here’s my use case. Should I find another solution?

I have a RPi3 attached to a 7" touchscreen and hifiberry board. This is one of the components I’m putting into a music console I’m building that will run alongside a turntable and bluetooth audio.

When I spec’d this out, I thought rasplex would eventually see an update and I could use that to connect to my plex music. Then I got excited about a version of plexamp for embedded systems that could run on my pi. Now it reads like the plan is for a headless version which really doesn’t do me much good. I want effects and album art on the screen and to control the device without having to use a remote. I’m lame that way.

Am I out of luck? If so, do I need to rethink my entire stack for audio streaming?

How’s the headless work going? :crossed_fingers::crossed_fingers::wink::wink:

sorry, haven’t had a chance to peek yet.

Ok, hopefully we’ll get an Easter present then😉

Headless Plexamp in an egg, just great!

Seeking to use Plexamp on a Pi 3b+ (USB out to external DAC) with very little technical knowledge. Judging by the comments above I assume it is not currently possible? Appreciate any info. Thanks

Hi all,
few days ago I purchased the WiiM Mini, a tiny smart device that allows streaming from many services, is also equipped with a SPD/IF digital output and supports 24 bit 192 kHz… I think that such kind of streamers would be great Plexamp headless endpoints as they are small, relatively cheap and very simple to use. Why not?

Some people ave gotten it to work, using an old version (2.0) of the Plexamp client for Pi… But I just spent two days trying, and am giving up.

I am losing faith in the promised version 4.x headless Plexamp for Pi!!!

Don’t. We want it too.

Thanks, elan. Can you share any details to keep us encouraged, like milestones or dates? Do you need testers?

There are three Pis and three Sony speakers piled up on my workbench, just…pining away.

If it’s too hard to achieve, could we at least have Plexamp cast to a DLNA renderer? Then we could run Volumio for example on RPi and cast to it from Plexamp.

I feel that @elan doesn’t owe us a timeline here - there’s clearly community interest, development intent on behalf of Plex, and it’s always better to underpromise and overdeliver than the opposite.

I too have an idle Pi and vintage receiver that would love this solution, but I can’t assume that this is a strong business case for Plex - more showing community love. Just my 2 cents.

It’s not that I wouldn’t share a timeline if I had one, I just don’t  The headless stuff is something I hack on whenever there’s a rainy evening or weekend and lately I’ve had a lot of house chores!

That’s fully understandable. Is there any way to help?

Sent tater tots.

There’s a bar in Minnesota that deep-fries tater tots. They’re fabulous as finger food alongside a tall, cold beer.

If we’re ever there at the same time, I’ll buy you a trough of them.

I’ve used headless Plexamp on 2 raspis for years before they suddenly stopped working a few months ago. Stupid me updated everything I could think of on the pis attempting to get it working again. Including upgrading from debian Buster to Bullseye.
Turns out that was a mistake since the workaround for the 2.0 beta of Plexamp for raspis does not work on Bullseye.

Using these commands in my pi gives me:
grafik
The NodeJS version is so outdated that I can’t install it on bullseye, which effectively rendered my 2 raspberry pi 4Bs, which I only bought for this purpose (including 2x HiFiBerry DAC+ Pro DACs) useless for now.
I mean I could have reverted to Buster and reinstalled everything, but doing so for a piece of software that was not updated since '19 seemed a foolish thing to do. I’m delighted that there’s a new version on the horizon tho.

Being able to turn off my PC, only letting the stereo and the raspi run, quickly selecting an album on my phone and then sitting back to read while even being able to turn off the wifi on my phone to prevent being disturbed was such a nice thing to do.

I’d love to be able to do it again.

Can I just say I’m super stoked to see maybe possibly a more accessible plexamp Pi headless in the future.

Not sure what to do till then as mines broke and im missing music at work…ill try and work out how to send tater tots.
