Getting a machine i want to turn into a server for plex
I7 860 with 16gb ram.
Trying to decide between linux or windows. Existing pms is windows.
Is there any downside to pms on linux?
Transcoding?
Updates?

It is all about the OS you know best.
There are more subtle problems that “can” be encountered in Linux but Windows imposes a bit more OS issues on a server.
I know Linux and Windows pretty well but I know Windows a good deal better.
I have run servers under both but I found that I had to spend more time tweaking the Linux setup than I did under Windows. I have nor retired my Linux systems and run nothing but Windows because it is easier for me.
Whichever you choose if you do not give the Plex serving computer additional unrelated tasks you will probably have good stability and reliability. Servers should serve and need to do little else.
Again, there is little difference in reliability so choose the OS you are most comfortable with.

Even a modern, entry-level i3 has more transcoding performance.
In my opinion, this is not a good hardware platform for a Plex Server. Particularly with a Plex Pass and the need to transcode for mobile sync.
It is sons old pc. Cannot beat cost and is better than what i currenty have
Thanks… Planning on dedicating it.
My hobby is plex. And i work in it… Need to spend some more time with linix and the can be a good reason… Tweaking is ok as long as i am not loosing function by using linux
It will work, just make sure you either have clients that can direct play your content (HTPC, Nvidia shield, rPi, etc) or pretranscode your files to a compatible format like h264 with aac2.0 and/or ac3 5.1 audio.
Sucks it doesn’t have quicksync, but you might have to option to change the cpu down the line

Mind one’s expectations. It is a 9 year old processor.
Software transcode will work… I only serve falmily… And they only occasioaly use… Only transcode is because of subtitles…
Once i get i will see if mobo supports newer processor. Tho i think qsv needs chipset doesn’t it?
Replacing 11 yo processor
What chipset is on the motherboard x58’s wont work with Windows 10 past the March update.
Don’t know about the chipset.
You’re right software will work (not for HEVC), assumed passmark would be much lower
It all depends on what you plan on hosting.
I’ve got a x3470 processor. Damn near the same thing as this i7. Works just fine for my needs.

I can play raw DVD mkv files, and 1080p optimized files without issue. 3 streams at once, 2 remote.
I encode x.264… So hevc not an issue…
Have not decided if i want to do 4k at this point… I get it on netflix. Not very much content on dvdbr in 4k at this point… And expensive fo what is.
I will likley put linux on it…
