I’m getting “this server is not powerful enough to convert video” whenever I select any subtitle type other than SRT type. Please advise.
Which Plex client are you using?
Enabling subtitles may result in a video transcode. If your server is not powerful enough to transcode the video you will receive the error message.
For example, with the Plex app on LG TVs, if the audio is transcoding, enabling any subtitle results in video transcoding.
Plex Dashboard → Now Playing will show if the video or audio is transcoding.
It’s the web browser client. i’m pretty sure the server is powerful enough (AMD 6core 2.7Ghz) and it was fine transcoding video to different resolutions.
Would you happen to have DEBUG logs available which capture a failed playback attempt?
Is the CPU an AMD Phenom II ?
I enabled debug log and tried play video and selected .ASS subtitle. Here’s the logs. (I extracted everything after 2022-05-02 23:50 since that’s when I attempted playback) I couldn’t see anything out of the ordinary. and yes the cpu is Phenom II X6 1045T.
com.plexapp.system.x.log (414 Bytes)
Plex Media Server.x.log (33.7 KB)
May I have more please ? You cropped off the “MDE:” portion which is also what I needed to see
- Start the Playback attempt
- Let it fail
- Settings - Server - Troubleshooting - Download Logs
- Attach the ZIP
The problem with that Phenom is , 3044 passmarks, spread over 6 cores => 500 Passmarks per thread. That’s going to be VERY hard pressed to convery any higher resolution / complex video.
ok. here’s everything. the video I tried playback is 640x480, mp4, h.264, 1498kbps. the error came up as soon as i hit play. (or if i playing the video using .SRT subtitle then pause it and change to .ASS without even unpause)

Thank you for the logs.
What are the player’s settings? Automatic? Only Image Formats? Always burn?
Converting the ASS subtitle to what’s compatible is likely the problem:

Is it possible you’ve reached the end of usable life for that 12 year old CPU
It seems like whatever video i choose, only SRT subtitle will work, anyother subtitle format will get the CPU not powerful enough error. I finally gave up and use ffmpeg to burn the subtitle to the video since the original is in VOBSUB and any OCR based converter gave me subpar results. (Anyway, I still don’t think the 12 years old CPU is the culprit since ffmpeg can burn the subtitle w/ 4.7x speed on the same computer while I’m witching other video)
