GPU and better multithread support for transcoding

hoping to see this great improvement. the main competitor supports already this… and I would avoid to switch software to save my hw.

Unbelievable. Currently the most of CPUs has a kind of HW encoding support, like Quick Sync. Why doesn’t support Plex this till 2013?

Shall I use Emby after I bought my lifetime Plex pass?! Relay? X(

I still like Plex for so many other reasons over Emby but the lack of HW support is getting more and more annoying.

Hi

Lets be green… GPU transcoding is the most efficient.

Regards

A little holiday surprise for everyone.

A little holiday surprise for everyone.

OMG AMAZING. FINALLY.

I have a server board that has lots of memory, 8 cores and I could easily run multiple video cards if it would benefit Plex operations, but doesn’t seem to help.
Not bragging compared to many of the rigs I have seen, but without using the tools given to us, we simply stroll around in the dark looking for a light to guide us.

Great idea and already exists in emby so take a look at that code.

My setup is an Asus X99 Gaming Mobo 32gb Dominator Platinum ram an intel i7-6800k (Ryzen wasn’t out yet) an old gtx 980 I tossed in there just to get an HDMI out for my monitor setup with 4 10TB internal drives and a Synology 1515+ NAS with an extra 5 6tb drives shared across my network and for Plex. I would love to see GPU support even though 4K 10bit 65+Mbps video plays perfectly fine I think it would help loading times slightly. It would also give me a reason to put my Asus Strix 1070’s in sli from my Ryzen rig into my Plex server and buy two 1080ti Strix cards lol

I’m coming from an old dell dual Xeon setup that worked great at the time but couldn’t do 4K at that bitrate and was only doing one stream at a time then now my daughters have Rokus in their rooms and stream at the same time (restricted bandwidth) but gpu support would be great

Hi Plex team,

I have a gaming rig with dual GPU. It will be nice if PMS can support GPU transcoding so it can utilize all my hardware. Right now my PMS only can support 1 transcoding.

Thing to keep in mind, GPU transcoding will ALWAYS be lower quality than CPU transcoding (well always for now). Would be nice to be able to specify CPU or GPU transcode in the client (advanced features toggled on or something for advanced users, and only if they are granted permissions) or a toggle to force CPU, all others are whatever is available. If they finally put out a distributive load balancer like we have been asking for years, it would be interesting to see if we can use a GPU farm like they do in bitcoining to do our Transcodes.

@boboki I personally would not benefit from this but I like what you’re getting at and know it would be useful for people who use up their share limit/later when 4k is the norm for storage and being able to transcode multiple streams.

How about CUDA support to allow multi-GPU transcoding?
