GPU Decoding not working on Plex Desktop for Linux (Snap/Ubuntu)

Player Version: 1.90.1

Whenever I am watching a video on Plex Desktop, the fans speed up significantly and CPU utilisation spikes, clearly indicating that the player is not using hardware decoding for the file.

I’m running the official Plex Desktop app which was installed via Snap.

The device is a Framework Laptop 13" with an AMD Ryzen 7 7840U w/ Radeon 780M Graphics.
OS is Kubuntu 22.04 with KDE 5.27.

Would it be possible to fix this behavior and get hardware acceleration to work?

Same issue on Flatpak version!

Same issue with a 7940hs on ubuntu 23.10.
plex-desktop and plex-htpc snap, none of them works with hardware decoding.
Has been the case for more than 6 months now…
It works well everywhere else, except on this “new” machine.

More than a month and nothing is fixed. I tried to upgrade to ubuntu 24.04, now it is even worst.
In addition to plex-htpc being unusable, the new version of kodi also broke my composite addon. And none of the plex addon are working (PM4K, PlexForKodiConnect or plex). Now the mini-pc is a nice brick displayed in my living room. I cannot use plex anymore.

I seriously regret giving plex team any money. It has been only trouble.

Likewise. I had thought of getting plex pass when it was on sale recently, but not a chance now. Even if they fix this issue soon it will take a while to rebuild trust.

More maddening is I want to make my point and get off Windows due to the recall announcement, and this has delayed it as the plex client is the only thing stopping the move.

N100 cpu for me. Choppy unusable mess here, super slick on the windows desktop client.

EDIT just tested fedora 40 fully updated and plex is working fine with hw acceleration. Seems Ubuntu/snap is my main issue and at least as of testing it 12 hours ago, was/is broken.
