Is there any progress from Plex there ?
I have the same issue using Plex on Sony OLED A1and playing x265 HDR content…
Plays perfectly with Kodi so it as to be fixed by Plex !
i can agree, no Problems with Kodi, but still with plex…
Same problem here, Sony Bravia KD-55XE8596, Android TV (App vers. 6.16.0.4271) , Plex server vers. 1.12.3.4973 (windows10)
[edit] No issue with Kodi.
So, I’ve got a XF9005 (most recent Sony TV) . I’m running 6.12.0 due to issues above this version… I have black bars with Plex app, I tried 6.16.0/1 and too many bugs but that was also black bars.

I’ve tried multiple films and tv shows in HDR and all appears to be ok.
Let me know what file type you have tried and see if I can sample it.

New app vers 6.16.2.4628 (30th April) does’t solve the problem.
Are you guys sure that KODI showing you content in HDR?
Because I doubt it does. it randomly playing the same video with HDR and without (at least sometimes it says HDR).
- Play a video, Hit action button,
- navigate to Picture, hit OK.
- does it say HDR somewhere right after words Picture?

All of my content is HDR, if I play it on a non-HDR tv it is extremely washed out. Plays perfectly, in HDR, via Kodi. No luck in Plex.
I wish Plex would just admit it is something wrong with their app rather than saying it’s the TV, it clearly isn’t if Kodi plays HDR content with no issues.

If your content is washed out it means it is probably transcoded.
HDR from non HDR is not that easy to distinguish with the available content today. As I said for me KODI most of the time plays without HDR.
Do you have ATV1 or ATV2 ? Maybe there is a problem with ATV1 CPUs/GPUs ? Because I have ATV2 LCD and no grey bars.
Forgot to add HDR with 60k bitrate is impossible to watch on KODI. It will have a super lag. Plex has lags too but not that hard (still not watchable - not pleasent pauses every 20-30 seconds). MX Player seems to be playing with no lags such videos.
By the way
Try MX Player with the same content (and see if you see grey bars or not). For me it is the best player on Sony Android TV today (since none of good video players supports passthrough anyway on these TVs)

I’m aware the washed out content on non-HDR TVs is due to transcoding, I just pointed that out to show that I am actually using HDR files.
I have an XBR-65X850C, it is absolutely playing files correctly with HDR in Kodi (bars are black), I have very little to no lag with Kodi. I really don’t have any lag for the Plex app either, but the Plex app is showing the grey bars with HDR content.

Your local network probably can’t handle the transfer rate and MX Player is just handling the buffer better than Kodi or Plex. My Plex server is hooked up to 4 gigabit ports in link aggregation and my TVs are wired to the same switch, I rarely experience any lag or stutter on videos.
Grey bars only appear with x265 HDR content. Standard HEVC H265 HDR is not affected. believe me I performed extensive testing. x265 HDR is played without transcoding on both Plex and Kody on Sony Oled A1 but only Plex shows grey bars. As simple as that.

I don’t think it is my local network. My network is on 1gbits (TV has 100mbits LAN and as long as I know all TVs have 10mbits LAN),
What is the bitrate the videos you play? I tried today video with Bitrate 65027 kbps. No way KODI plays it smooth neither does Plex (but it WAY better than KODI). MX Player handles it.
By the way has anyone got x265 HDR video so that I could test on my TV? all my videos are H265 HDR that probably explains why I never seen grey bars yet.
As long as I know all TVs have 100mbits not 10mbits as i said before. It was mistyping.
Yea I’m using HEVC with bitrates like 16,000 kbps to 30,000 kbps. 100 mbps on your TV is just theoretical, you’re probably maxing out the connection using videos of 65,000 kbps, especially if other services are running on it, MX just handles buffer better (probably just has a much large cache).

yeah HEVC with bitrates like 16,000 kbps to 30,000 kbps KODI still handles. Above that NOPE (not sure where that above really starts 50mbits already lagging). I like videos on 50 000 - 65,000 kbps. don’t ask me why. They look better in my brain.
by the way there is a request for Plex devs then - to handle buffer better if that is really the case
downloading x265 for testing.
FWIW, if your video is showing 60mbps that just means that’s the average, it could still have spikes much higher than that.
